Sonic 4 likely coming to PC. Set your disappointment levels to mediocre.

According to a perusal of Sonic Retro, some Steam registry investimigating has turned up that since being first put on Steam, it's been heavily updated and looks to have a configuration menu outside of the game, like Sonic Generations.

    Gameplay trailer...

...this physics demonstration highlights one of the reasons why it wasn't as loved by the fan-base as it intended to be.

On the plus side, maybe it'll be moddable? Ironic that Sonic 4 was intended to be liked by the 'hard core' fans, whilst Sonic Colours wasn't and how the two groups seemed to like the other game more, generally speaking. Which begs the question, why the hell haven't Sega realised they'd get a good load of sales off a well priced Sonic Colours port to PS360/PC?

In other Sonic related news, no word on the release date of Sonic Generations' DLC (Casino Night pinball) which was supposed to be released Boxing Day, as well as absolute silence on the Sonic CD front. That, too, is in the Steam registry but seems to be kept quite quiet.

Yeah I'm not too excited about this, never have been either: back when it was first announced I felt like giving it a resounding 'meh' due to the air of desperation the project had all over it. But I'm probably going to get it anyway, if just for completionism's sake. Although I'd be far, far more interested in that Sonic CD re-release which they seem to be hiding for some insane reason.

(in other Sonic news, the Sonic Generations OST is finally out, which makes 2012 already amazing when it comes to music releases - especially since I hadn't heard the 3DS songs before and they're just as amazing as the proper version ones. Must get the physical copy someday, the box looks gorgeous)

I played the demo on the 360 and deleted it after about 15 minutes, thoroughly disappointed. We'll see what this version is like though...

And yes, I have the SGOST and it is fantastic. Definitely listen to Big Arm if you haven't yet. It makes the original version seem like filler boss music.

(Incidentally, I was going to make a general purpose Sonic thread because it's usually the same people posting in them, but I thought this was stand-outish news to warrant it's own. Maybe down the line if we get more PC games...)

I was actually thinking just a day or so ago that the SonGens topic could be converted into a general Sonic discussion topic (seeing as we've already discussed CD et al there).

Ugh. I played Sonic 4 "episode 1" on Wii and it was NOT enjoyable. Slow, poor physics, etc...

I'll never understand SEGA. They're sitting on a pile of IP's that they do nothing with, and yet they will make Sonic game after Sonic game. They hit a home run with Generations, they should lay off for a bit.

Hey suit-jerks running SEGA, give us fucking Shenmue 3 right now! How many millions of times do people have to ask for it before they make it? Also, a new Streets of Rage wouldn't be a bad thing. But hey, I guess 30 new Sonic games by 2020 will be ok too. NOT!

CD news, straight from The Taxman (the guy who made the Retro engine CD runs on).

The steam version is coming very soon, the release date was affected by logistics that's all I can really say.
My guess? It's related to the impending release of Episode 4.

I wouldn't be surprised if they've timed the two together to get a double-pack promo going on for them.

Right. I wonder if they'll roll in the Generations DLC too?

Ugh, depending on the PC changes for Episode 1...a double pack may be worth it. Hnnnnng.

The Sonic CD port is excellent and you should buy it.

It also highlights everything wrong with Sonic 4, which you should avoid. It's seriously bad.

Would be a pretty good timing to release that as well. Although I still think you guys should calm down about it slightly because the Casino Night pinball really isn't all that special and you might overhype it for yourselves!

I actually did on my iPod Touch. It's...hard and new, but I'm enjoying it for the most part. I'm struggling with the touch controls and died several times on the final level, but it's solid, I'll give it that. Can't wait for it to come out on Steam.

No chance of that happening :) I want it to muck around in, much like I do in SG anyhow now. It's also something of precedent; if SG gets any more DLC, is the PC version gonna have delayed responses to it like this again?

Which brings in the question, can we see them releasing additional DLC content for the game? Both Sonic 06 and Unleashed were heavily DLC supported for a long time after their release so those act as a pretty good precedent. I really doubt we'd see new levels or general unique nostalgia content like the pinball (as that'd require new music and Sonic Team's not bothered with that for DLC so far), but I could see them easily adding additional missions and such.

Well they have the contents for Stardust Speedway...

But yeah, you make a good point. To be honest, I'd be happy in seeing a few more bosses and acts for zones.

Sonic 4's first zone is horrible, that's no doubt. The weird part is, I enjoyed mid-game a lot. Especially the gimmicky Labyrinths/Ruin zone. The art wasn't so ugly in those parts, and they were just more fun overall. That gimmick of the card bridge on the casino level is neat.

    "WARNING: Video Contains Comic Mischief"

    That always cracks me up.

    On topic.
I've never liked Sonic so hearing this is bad for a sonic game does not fill me with hope.

So is the momentum for Sonic 4 that bad even if you hold forward on the d-pad? It looks like everybody is complaining that the momentum is lost if you don't hold it, but I always do.

I'm currently playing Sonic Adventure DX purely as a backlog reduction exercise. It's definitely not bad but the PC port is ... eh. Couldn't even force AA through the Nvidia driver.

You can maintain some but, from what I recall, it dissipates rather quickly.

Basically, the problem is that there's no physics engine. Sonic retains no inertia. It vaguely imitates this, but only so long as you hold down the 'go fast' button. You can't just let go of the button while rolling and expect to coast to a stop, but rather just abruptly stop dead.
