So what's the problem with this? Admittedly, it's probably been...God, fifteen years or so since I last played a Sonic game, but I seem to recall cheap pits and spikes being integral parts of the experience. Wouldn't this help avoid them?

With the finer details (publisher details, website links etc.) on Sonic 4 added to the registry and Sonic CD apparently re-emerging, I can't see them not doing a double-pack release, definitely within the next few days, if not tomorrow/today (delete as appropriate to your time zone).

How would people feel about a Sonic thread being made when they do come out? Seems pointless having two threads on the go, not to mention it'll likely stir up discussion of Episode 2, Generations and everything else Sonic. I would imagine it'd be best to do in the social section of the forums. I also propose the title of Rock, Paper, Sonic for such a thread.

Also in the mean time, let's play a game of "People who want Sonic CD, don't want 4, but will probably get it anyhow if it's reduced in price as a pack?"

I suggest "Sonic, Rock, Paper" as name, simply because Sonic is faster and will always get there first (yeah, yeah, I'm horrible).

Also, if it does indeed come at a reduced enough price, I do suppose I'll buy the pack; Otherwise, just CD.

A Sonic thread would be nice. I'm glad that Sonic titles are coming to PC(I would include the racing game in a broad definition as well) when they're actually in some pretty good years for them. Well, except for Sonic 4, but we'll see what happens with episode 2...

I completely understand why people dislike Sonic 4. But I felt very similar with Generations. The new music and graphics are very nice, but the physics are also horribly wrong, and they force me to play these awful '3d' levels through.

(the 3D levels are the best part of Gens)

Yeah, dedicated Sonic thread would be great. I do still think that it'd be a valid enough alternative to simply rename this and/or the Gens thread, but I suppose that'd restrict us to only talk about PC Sonic and thus we'd spend most of our time cycling through the subjects "where is Sonic CD" and "why can't we get <upcoming Sonic game> :(". Has to be a punny name though, yes.

While I'm here, would any of you know what the PC port is like with Sonic Riders? Ever since Gens arrived I've wanted to start patching through the holes of Sonicality I've missed for one reason or another through the years, and some weeks back I bumped into a PC copy of Riders for sale in a local shop. Tempted to get it, but whether to grab the PC copy depends entirely on the state of the port.

Do we have any advances on Rock, Paper, Sonic or Sonic, Rock, Paper?

@Dario - The aim would be to include all Sonic games currently playable on the PC, so I would include All Stars even if I've never played it :)
@Curious - I wouldn't say they were wrong per se. It's a shame they didn't go all the way in perfecting it, but I find it's definitely in the good enough category. Also, I find myself using Homing Attack with Classic a fair bit now...

EDIT: Sonic CD DLC alledgedly coming to Spiral Knights. It is very soon. More importantly, there is now a demo for Generations available on Steam. I get the impression that it's Green Hill Acts 1 and 2, which makes sense.

The thing is, I really, really want to like Sonic 4, but I just can't. That said, I will probably get it if it's part of a pack in the sheer desperate hope that the same odd thing will happen with Sonic 4 as happened with Bastion, which I found boring on XBLA but really liked on PC even though they were pretty much identical (to the point that I played it on PC with a 360 controller).

That's a dim hope, though, since my grievances with Bastion on XBLA weren't quite as specific as the reasons I can't like Sonic 4.

Is there even enough Sonic on PC, excluding emulators, to justify a thread? Are all the classic Sonics on Steam by now? And this thread reminds me to start playing Generations again, got to the final zone and for some reason haven't yet actually gone ahead and beaten the game. Other games distracted me :P

Well, there's Sonic 1-3&K, Sega and Sonic All Stars Racing, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Generations, Sonic CD and Sonic 4 (I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if Episode 1 is coming out, then we'll no doubt get Episode 2 and 3, if that becomes a thing), Spinball, 3D Blast and Colours emulated via Dolphin. The only main titles not available on Steam is Heroes (which is playable on the PC), 2006 and Unleashed, of which only the latter is seen as being worth playing although would seem to be bettered by Colours and Generations. Realistically, there's not much left off here. That's a fair amount of legally doable stuff (with Colours/Dolphin on the cautious side).

Add in to that the fact that a single thread allows people to come in, ask a question (say, "Is Generations worth playing?" and then later "Are there other games I should play in the series?") as well as update all the Sonic stuff in the mean time, I'd say it's worth doing.

Regardless, I'd say it should go in the clubs and general sociability section. It won't be updated all the time, but Sega seem to have a renewed interest, if not a subdued one, of making sure the PC is getting the content. That's good enough for me.

Also, another proposed name: Robotnik, Paper, Shotgun.

So there's a fair few then. Actually I own or have access to a few myself, namely Sonic 3D Blast and SA DX. I don't think my PC is up to the job of emulating the Wii, but then again I haven't tried yet. Is there a way to get SADX working on Windows 7 perhaps? Because I'd totally like to play it again.

Also maybe we could arrange a few games of Sonic Robo Blast 2 somehow, or just play it. It might be fun for novelty value!

Heroes is grossly underrated. It has its flaws (repetetiveness, plot that doesn't really know what to do with itself, cheesiness up the wazoo) but the level design is good, the soundtrack is excellent (as usual) and the gameplay, team mechanic and all, is quite good. I think it got a lot of unfair flak when it came out because devs said one thing (going a bit simpler in direction again and bringing some of the feel of the old games back after the plot-heavy Adventures) and fans interpreted it as another (they're making a 2D Sonic in 3D) but I think the general opinion's gentler about it these days. It's no masterpiece but it's a solid, good Sonic title IMO. But of course, if you're allergic to the 3D titles in the first place it's not going to convert you to their sides either.

Regarding PC Sonics, Sonic R and Sonic Riders are also out on PC if you fancy Sonic racing. The former's an old title but I see it frequently in bargain bins. And according to my research this morning, the latter's PC port is... not one of the best.

Also, name suggestions: Rock Paper Spindash (though might be a bit too vague). Rock Paper Sonic works for me too.

I would have to vehemently disagree on Heroes. I thought it was really poor. BUT, these are the kind of discussions you can have in a dedicated thread! Not to mention discussion of fan games, like the unfortunately cancelled Sonic Fan Remix.

I do like Rock, Paper, Spindash rather a lot.

Perhaps this new thread should be made at some point soon then considering we're already starting to get all these discussion branches here.

[nerd]But but but he was listed as ドクター エッグマン (dokutaa egguman) on page 7 of the Japanese manual for the original Sonic the Hedgehog therefore his name is Eggman![/nerd]

Back in reality, I'm happy with whatever anyone wants to call him.

Steam's weekend deal is Sonic titles at 50-75% off, and they've also released Sonic CD, Casino DLC, and Sonic 4 Ep 1. JG Man, if you're going to create a general sonic thread, now would be the time to do so.
