ArmA 2: Combined Operations - We have our own server

I joined in for the last two missions yesterday (as LeFuz) and had a great time playing with you folks. Thanks for being patient with me struggling with my voice setup.

I have a couple of questions that it didn't seem like a good time to ask last night:

- Sometimes people would say things like "contacts at 210" or some number that sounded like a bearing. What does this mean? (I don't remember there being anything in the UI showing bearing as a number, but could easily have missed something.)

- How do you tell if you're wounded?

- I wasn't getting the green diamond icons over (nearby?) friendlies that I remember from single player or other multiplayer sessions. Is this something that I've turned off (accidentally), or is it a setting on the server? I'm running the sthud mod.

Confession: I'm pretty sure I shot egg after he was thrown from his exploding technical, since I was assuming that anyone on foot at that point was an enemy. Sorry :(

Press k, it will bring up a compass where you can see the bearings. IMO using numerical bearing is generally not that useful unless pointing out something very specific from a specific position, a general direction like northwest (or if it's more north than west, north-northwest etc.) or left/right (based on the direction your squad has been heading) is more practical.

- How do you tell if you're wounded?

Look if you can see jam on your uniform in 3rd person, or if your sights are shaking even when you've been still for a while, or if you hear pained grunting and there's no-one else in the vicinity. Yeah, you'd think it'd be easier to know whether you've been wounded or not...

That's a server setting we have. I think you should still have a diamond visible on your fireteam leader, but I'm not sure. Sthud is a good thing to have.

Friendly fire sometimes happens, especially in the heat of battle (and all those burning / explodey technicals certainly had that covered). It's cool. Egg will probably shoot you back later.

Great session tonight chaps! I think that was my first time commanding and I hope I wasn't to annoying! I knew that would be a good place to put the MMG squad (Dakka dakka squad).

Also I must apologise for the teeny weeny war crime I may/may not have committed.

Yes, thank you for the FOLK session! Here's some summing up from my view: 1st mission: Alpha Medic. Died in combat. I thought that mission was pretty brutal, but good to see some of the fellow members managed to escape. Wolf is a legend.

2nd mission: US v OPFOR, Player versus Player. US Alpha medic. Died in distraction Humvee. Couldn't save my fellow men, it was a tragedy, but I shall have my vengeance...

3rd mission: BEST MISSION OF TONIGHT'S FOLK SESSION. Driver for BMP2 codenamed "RED FIST", gunner friendly fires, hit by stray rocket, stuck in riverbank, get out, gunner runs me over, Bodge blows shit up with his rocket truck, good times was had. Only one small request: ENGINEERS REQUIRED for BMP2

4th mission (same 2nd mission but reversed, US being OPFOR, and OPFOR being US): OPFOR Gunner codename "DAKKA", behind a rock, enemy nearby, FIRED WHOLE BELT into Fer, missed. Zeroing was marked 300 metres, enemy was 50. Died a tragic death. My teammate got himself a revenge kill. I scared the bejesus out of someone that's for sure.

Overall, good session. Looking forward to the next one.

That hangar in the background? Wolfenswan blew it up. That armed Humvee, now in flames? RPG'd by Wolfenswan. That body? Looted by Wolfenswan. The car next to him? Only the second car within two minutes to be nicked by Wolfenswan (the first was a Lada).

Sometimes it all goes right. Tonight was such a night. We began with a superb turn-out: at 19:30 UK, 25 comrades were ready to bring about the socialist agrarian utopia. And it got better and better from there. First Time was an epic tale of loss (Alpha) and heroism (Wolfenswan); the first Warlords saw some frantic fighting at close quarters; then the centerpiece of the session: Zargabaddies - a truly epic assault, culminating in the first known use of a Grad rocket system in a Folk session. It was pure Cross of Iron stuff, as our combined arms platoon rolled forward into heavy opposition from infantry, technicals and eventually T-34s - Peckinpah would be jealous of the battlefield vista available to us spectating dead. Finally, the second Warlords brought even more intensity, from the opening DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA style ambush to the final, desperate shoot-out in the mosque (as the target ambled to safety a long way away). I'll try and write my own AAR post in the next day or so - and urge all good comrades to post in this thread with their own memories.

The odd friendly-fire aside (and hey, it just proves that Folk is a friendly place), everyone was superb tonight; I really mean that - after the session some of the hosts were chatting and we all were struck by how well people have learned to work together. Even our new faces tonight put in fine shows all. But I just want to put this out there now:

Comrade Wolfenswan is to be known as Comrade Hero Wolfenswan.

Also, I really enjoy these adversarials, because it's an entirely different player versus player experience than what I'm used to. I've been playing various games online in clans and such since the time of QuakeWorld, and it's always been about competition and beating the other team, often at the cost of fun. When playing within a group of friends, the aspect of competing is de-emphasized, and actually having a fun game gets emphasized.

The plan was fairly straight forward, to approach the airfield in a line and echo were to enter at the south end. We reached the fence without incident but when we got to the break in the wall Monkey bought it hard.
The two of us left headed further south and crawled into the airfield under the wall and took down a couple of EIs at the rear of the hangers that were engaging delta and charlie.
A shout from Unaco alerted me to an enemy fireteam incoming who did not notice our presence and they were quickly taken down. Then the CO bought it (Sulphur) and DC (Fer) took command and we moved to his position to regroup.
Enemy infantry were approaching from the other side of the airfield and a static M2 machinegun provided a useful means of holding them back. The waves of reinforcements soon hit us from the north and it was time to break off.
DC ordered us to our vehicles to pull out but I took a round to the side of the head as i relocated.

Our carefully constructed plan involved Alpha and Charlie providing covering fire for Bravo's advance to the target. Charlie started taking fire so we moved south from the hills to the cover on the road before crossing and advancing to the target through cover.
Mort took an early hit as we pushed towards the minaret but we managed to thin out the defenders engaging Alpha. Bravo was causing havoc within the town as we closed on the mosque compound but we started taking losses and I was wounded on the ground.
The rest of my squad members were even less fortunate buying it immediately. I forced my broken body to the door to the mosque compound only to have my pain ended shortly afterwards by a burst of AK fire.

Zargabaddies
CO - Bodge
So my thinking behind this was as follows. I wanted to try something a little more dynamic than normal. Alpha were to encircle the target hopefully avoiding contact until the last moment. Bravo, MMG and Red fist were to establish a base of fire on the compound to cover Alpha, with bravo advancing when it was clear.
Charlie and Delta were placed to secure the southern flank to allow the assault from the north to be uninterrupted. C&D did a stirling job of engaging the troops to the south, co-ordinating superbly meaning Bravo's left (southern) flank was secure. Red Fist (FF aside) cleared Alpha's path before moving to aid C&D eliminate EI.
Alpha and bravo were in position to assault and C&D were holding their flank. This is when things went less than brilliant, first the BMP started feeling sorry for itself (something about RPGs) and then Alpha started taking heavy fire from the south/south west. With Bravo occupied with the compound Alpha were left a bit exposed without support.
C/D no longer had the support of an apc and Delta started taking losses. People were getting hit right, left and centre and I was forced to collect all our forces together to reassess the situation. We regrouped with B,C, MAT and the remnants of D heading south to secure the Grads and set up to push west towards the enemy settlements.
Unfortunately the enemy had different ideas with heavy infantry contact backed up by two T34s and a BTR40, our RPGs fell short and people were getting wounded fast. An executive decision was made to eliminate the enemy armour threat in the most dramatic fashion available. Grad rockets were spewed forth and enemies fell and exsploded.
Command notified us we were "Heroes", this led me to the conclusion that people died "heroes" so we should oblige and drove my second grad to the ridge and opened up once more until a 7.62 round silenced the explosions.

Alpha FTL - Bodge
We were tasked with being lookouts to spot the enemy advance, but as soon as our MMG team on the ridge notified us of contacts our role became a lot more fluid. With reports of enemy on three sides and them potentially holding a bunker on the ridge line to the south I sought clearance from command to make a single man assault on the bunker
while my squad members held the town and protected the now fleeing Warlord. I made it to the bunker to find it empty but could hear M249 fire from the ridge running to the east. I approached carefully and threw a grenade at an enemy helmet poking above a rock, the explosion sent three EIs flying leaving them wounded and at the mercy of our CO.
Turning around to cover our great Warlord's withdrawl myself and suicide could see that the blufor were slowly infiltrating the town. We took down infantry on a roof before being engaged by humvee's M2. Thanks to covering fire from Tigershark we managed to move off the ridge as our CO made it to freedom.


A superb session characterised by great teamwork and leadership, great kudos to those playing for the first or second time or so. Especially monkey for his solid performance as Opfor CO in the final mission.

So this is the AAR from my side for last night:
First mission: play a bit, then Arma crashed.
Second mission: play a bit then Arma crashed.
Third mission:Got huge lag for some reason, had to run to catch up with the rest, then TS crashed and I quit!
This game is so f****** temperamental...

• Your mission did not upload properly before you tried loading it on the server.
• This crashed the server.

Please try harder :(

whoops. i take the blame. we tested it locally beforehand and as it seemed to work there and didn't expect any errors. I had no idea that the server then crashed.
it was named after the conventions of the BIS-Mission Rep, which basically extends the system we use.
