These people have so not read any Lovecraft
BBCRussian scientists are racing to beat US and UK rivals and be first to drill into an Antarctic sub-glacial lake. The team has been drilling down to Lake Vostok, the largest of more than 100 bodies of liquid water buried under Antarctica's ice.
The lake has been sealed off from the surface for millennia, so it may contain life forms new to science.
Scientists are racing against the fast-approaching bitter cold and total darkness of Antarctic winter.
However, Prof John Priscu, who is in touch with the Russian researchers, told BBC News: "They are very, very close."

Rumour is there's been radio silence from the base for a few days now. Perhaps the Mayans were onto something after all ;)

Ugh. I bought a collection of Lovecraft's stories a few months ago, right before a hurricane came and knocked out our power for 3 days. I had nothing to do but read, and read I did. Huge mistake. I was terrified at every little creak or groan in the house. I loved The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Colour Out of Space, and The Whisper in the Darkness though. And by "loved" I mean "was scared shitless by"."What were we talking about? Pegasuses, pegasii, that's horses with wings. This motherf*cker got a sword that talks to him. Motherf*cker live in places that don't exist, it comes with a map. My God."

Ah shit that does sound like the start of The Mountains of Madness! Wait until they find ancient alien ruins and realize we are all doomed by great space god monsters.

Incidentally, has anyone seen this 2005 adaptation of The Call of Cthulhu? How is it?

Looks like it should have a guy and two robots in silhouette down front snarking. Nevertheless, it's on the to-do list.

That trailer unfortunately does make it look quite crappy. I would say it is an independent movie and it won't look like a hollywood blockbuster but I have to say I watched it without any preconceptions and it was a really good slow burning horror film. I think it really gets right the kind of horror Lovecraft goes for in his books. I would say its more Shadow Over Innsmouth then Cthulhu though.
