Wargame: European Escalation - unofficial RPS group - RockPaperStalin

    Hey folks.

    EDIT

After the brutal dictatorial regime of JimTheDog was overthrown, we may now all rejoice under the brutal commuist/socialist regime of Wolfenswan.

Please get ahold of Wolfenswan for details of how to join. :3 (And Wolfenswan, stick a post in that I can copy-paste-replace some stuff with up here for you.)

    EDIT

Wargame: European Escalation is a neat little RTS, currently available on Steam for a preorder that lets you play the multiplayer beta.

It's set in the cold war, is making a lot of people say positive things about it, and is rather fun. If you haven't heard about it, go look it up - it's excellent.

I'm JimTheDog in the game, go ahead and add me as a friend and mention yourselves here, and I will invite you into the very unofficial RPS team, RockPaperStalin, for a little teamwork oriented fun. Perhaps we can invade the ARMA guys' mumble server to voice chat, too!

I pre-ordered it from Gamersgate thinking it would include Beta access. Well... it doesn't. So I'm anxiously awaiting the official release.

And by all means use the Mumble Server, it's for all RPS gaming groups. You can create channels for different games on the fly as well.

Yeah, I've been playing a few games.

Never lost as Pact (except the first game where I literally could not figure out the controls), with 2 draws and 5 wins. Even the worst game where the enemy had sniper-artillery somehow ended up in a draw. Never won as NATO. T-72s are just too hard to kill, even for Acc 10 AP 11 ATGMs. *

    * May be filthy lies, but Pact certainly does feel easier to play as. A couple of T62s and Tunguskas are basically unbeatable in a head-on fight.

If you have the Gamersgate/IGN 15% Discount, that should stack with the 10% preorder bonus. Works out about 7 cheaper than from steam but you have to wait until Thursday to play.

I think PACT attracts slightly more competent players, and the first tank unlock you start with - the T-62 - seems to have better variants than the leopard line.

    *Shrugs*

ANYWAY. I am enjoying it immensely and look forward to playing games with/against you guys soon. :3

I took the liberty of creating a steam group for us to use. Chuck me your steam ID, Jim, and I'll make you admin. I just figured it's handy for organizing games with the event system and nice to hang around in the group chat if you want to ask for games

Okay. Given that this is all POPULAR AND STUFF, let's have a little meet and greet tonight at seven PM UK time. Details are in the steam group --> http://steamcommunity.com/groups/rpstalin

Basically, we will probably mess around with multiplayer, talk, and generally be social while engaging in cold war.

It's probably a good idea to be able to use voice comms, and the ARMA guys have a guide for that here -->

(The Wargame European Escalation room is waaaay near the bottom of the mumble server lists.)

Quick note of thanks to those who came by, and I enjoyed myself, as I hope the rest of you did. :3 (Sorry for stealing all your deployment zones.)

I had fun! It's a great game, love the balance between such a simple UI and the more realistic... umm.. realism. It's going to take a bit of effort for me to get good at, which is a good thing. Need to start learning these units (and a bit of patience).

Playing the Single Player for a bit I have to say this game is delightfully difficult. SImilar to playing RUSE on hard but the AI appears to be more competent. There are some ways to cheese missions though they still are far from a cakewalk.

That playing the SP allows one to unlock MP vehicles is imho a great design decision.

I was actually quite surprised by the AI. They do a bit of everything and actually feel quite competent using their troops. Iv had Russians zerg me with MI24s then fall back as they see my AA hammer at them only for them to then unleash some tanks and BRDS to test my defences. They also love to flank on a large scale! Personally I love using infantry which may seem odd to some players who feel that you need to be all armour to get anywhere but the flexibility you obtain with saying send two squads of SAS up onto a key strategic location (obviously a forest!) and being able to harass enemy movements is just great!

The game pretty much feels like an open book in it's way of approaching battles and I like that. Now need to build a NATO deck that suits me, fast movement with precise hitting.

On my first ranked game I scouted well with Gazelles (though I know they aren't great recon units it's just a bad habit of mine) and was able to locate my enemy's main force in a northern capture zone. With this information I moved my main force to his east through forests and managed to burst through destroying his force there and then. That's when I learned my first lesson, don't push too hard if you can't see what is ahead of you and when you have to resupply. Unwisely I pushed ahead hoping to get a quick victory getting into his FOB and destroying it, sadly I was met with a Hind spam (which I dealt with quite well) and finally some T-54s did the most damage to my force. I retreated to the area I had just captured and tried to regroup. Then I learned another hard lesson, infantry in forests vs armour = world of pain. Lost 4 Leopards due to my incompetence in unit placement. Eventually he won on points difference (1500 to my 1400 something). I dominated in control points taken but this seemed to account for nothing!

Anyone have any preferred strategies they find usefull? How many command vehicles would you spawn for a routine 1500 match?
