There are times when Dead Island really conjures up an atmospheric picture of the fallout from a grim disturbing apocalyptic horror.
Then the cartoonish and often comedic violence of the combat immediately breaks the spell. It's only after playing this that I now properly understand Gearbox's decision for ditching the original gritty visuals and going the whole hog on the comic book look for Borderlands. I wonder if Dead Island wouldn't have been better off doing the same, either that or making the combat and survival bit more realistic and hardcore.
With it's bright colourful onscreen stats and constant loot drops it really does feel very Borderlandsy at times.
You can turn off most of the floating numbers and hud though, can't you? However, I agree with you. Especially the constant clicking on bags and bins in order to extract money and materials.
