There's a couple of ways to finish him and it's quite easy. The hardest is to face him right on with dodging and slashing, then there's standing on the bridge/catwalk thing and drop down on his with your sword, does a pretty good amount of damage but requires precision and timing ( you wouldn't like missing and be run over by him ;p I also heard that there is a change you will get the boar helmet by doing this. ), and there's is you running past him to the right end of the level down the small stairs that leads to the next area of the map, he will chase you but he'll can't get any further than the first part of the leading down stairs since he's too big, he will keep trying attacking you you can just keep hitting his big dumb head until he's dead. ( back away a bit and he will turn out, if you want to slash hit butt for more damage,). And the last is what I did, lure him in to the burning fires.
I didn't know about the gate method though!

All special drops, such as the boar helmet, gargoyle helmet and black knight gear, are entirely random and as such only affected by your humanity (up to ten) and whether or not you have the covetous serpent ring equipped.
The only "kill them this way to get x" items are gained from the tails of bosses (and hellkite/bridge wyvern), though some plot-related characters (Lautrec, Petrus, etc) have different items depending on when during the story they die.

Oh really? I recall reading it at the Dark Souls wikidot that you have more change by one shot killing him with your sword from above.

@Ravelle - Thanks for the tips :-) Knowing my luck I would have spent days trying to kill it with the gate only to find it doesn't actually work.

I think I spent 30 minutes today swimming with the whales and dolphins and having a good time. Then I started wondering what they would drop and I felt terrible. I was on a vacation from the rather depressing Charr areas where my story took me so the Bloodtide Coast was the perfect spot to go diving and exploring and killing pirates.
