Last few of Darksiders 2 for a bit as I've completed the game. Wanted to grab some pics of the penultimate boss fight, but it was too cool and I didn't want to spoil the spectacle.

Certain attacks (ie. any stacked with frost damage) can freeze your enemies in place. Killing these enemies while they are means that they remain idle as their bodies disappear into the nether.

It's a special reward for finding some hidden items. Don't ask.

It's blood. Enemy bodies remove themselves from the screen in this way. The cool thing, like I said, is that because it was previously frozen in place, it vanishes as it was, instead of from its death animation pose. It's clearer to see if you open the image up in its own window.

Someone needs to turn one of the last two into a buddy cop meme. Those expressions.

Ah, Orzammar and The Proving. An arena governed by strict rules where killing your opponent is frowned upon.

Fuck that (hit the music), MORTAL KOMBAT!

    I love this spell.

Very nice Seph, just wondered what resolution you run in? I'm guessing above 1080?

Thanks man. I run the game in 1080p with AA. Constantly fighting the temptation to get a 2560x1440 monitor but they're a bit too much dollah for my taste.

Is it Black Mesa or the Source Engine that looks a bit dated? I want to say the former, but I keep coming back to "...but isn't that how HL2 looks?"

That's pretty much the 2007 version of Source I think. That looks better than Half Life 2, not a whole lot, but definitely better. That said, I still can't believe Half Life 2 is a 2004 game, I'm playing through it now and it's still quite lovely in places.

Yep, HL2 had a simple, but wonderful art direction. Art direction > graphics.

It's something that a lot of development misses entirely. Other than having to rely on gameplay as the graphics wouldn't cut it, there are some old games that still hold up tremendously well because of their graphical design. Whilst Battlefield 3 looks amazing now, unquestionably, it's going to depreciate over time due to its attention to 'real'. The better graphics, the more 'real'; everything prior becomes redundant. There's a few contemporary games that particularly ring true of going against this, such as Borderlands, VVVVVV and Binding of Isaac. Whilst graphical fidelity will obviously affect them (we are getting a BL2 after all, not to mention a revised BoI) they'll hold up a lot longer under scrutiny.

Hmmm. But this is probably already acknowledged by most people in here!
