The Homeworld IP was bought by *someone* in the recent THQ auction. Maybe not immediately, but you could see it go up on something like GOG by the end of the year.

@LeviathanPT - PCars remains absolutely stupidly nice.
Powered by Steam. And biscuits. I'm also a twit and dabble in creative writing.

I can only speak for myself but I'm not much of an RTS player and I found it fairly easy to get into. Navigating a proper 3D space takes some time to learn (it's pretty much unique in how it handles space but gives you nice tools to navigate it) and the game's units are very much "rock paper scissors" which means you have to learn what units counter others. There isn't a huge number of different ships and their strengths are fairly obvious so it's not a big hurdle.

Since this is the screenshot thread I booted up the game and got into a quick fight to get some examples of how it plays in practice.

First the tactical map, which shows the entire level map, objectives, asteroids and units within sensor range. You have access to the full UI and can give commands to all units. You'll be popping in and out of the tactical map often to get an overview and give commands to your fleet. The camera is always free and you can rotate and zoom anywhere.

Press space and you're back in the normal camera view. This is a small engagement with enemy fighters. Your ships can be assigned to groups (1-10) and also into "strike fleets" with various formations. The UI is nice and clean and works like you'd expect from a modern RTS, all commands and menus have keyboard shortcuts.

Select one or more ships and press F and the camera will lock on and follow the unit(s), in this screen a frigate. You can still give orders to other ships and zoom or rotate the camera. The game gives a lot of audio feedback on what's going on (this is customisable) so you can usually enjoy the sights without being worried that you'll miss important events.

AI is generally pretty good with different craft attacking targets they're strong against so there isn't much micro needed during battles. Bombers will go for capital ships, interceptor squads will go after fighters etc. What you'll mostly be looking out for is damaged ships and fighter squadrons. Fighters can be docked and repaired at capital ships and larger ships can be repaired with Resource Collectors (they'll do this automatically if assigned to a strike force).

Homeworld and Eve are the two videogames that have made ships better. They looks stylish and functional.

I have heard that most modelers have more experience with biologic models, so for them is hard to model a ship. A ship is something with a mechanical with a function, and the style can suggest the use. In homeworld the small ships looks different than the big ships, but related. A mothership of a race looks related to his fighters. The fighters looks small and fragile, the motherships huge and resilient, frigates are in betwen.

I loved to use laser frigates to fry a capital ship, the moment all the ships sorround the enemy in a sphere formation and start firing the beams at the same time is magical.

Wow, thanks a lot (to Tikey as well)!

Now to get my hands on a retail copy ... New ones still go for around 15 on Amazon.de, a damn shame it's not available for digital distribution.

Great shots in the last batch too!

HW certainly handled 3D space better than Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. The former was only ever slightly confusing, while the latter was always frustrating.

It's sad that the first Google result for that is one of those achievement guides site. I should really see Indiana Jones ASAP.

And then Englehorn took Jimmy. Off to save Ann from Kong's clutches.

I think I just gave away my copy of HW2... Or lent it to a friend. I still have Homeworld 1 though. :)
