    Max, 1080p, 4xAA.

Optimization is shite. Going to hold off playing the game until a few patches have been released.

ed: it's supposed to be with the helmet on, but the helmet sides seem really out of place when it's stretched across three monitors (like the driver has a really wide head + awesome FoV, and they've made a helmet specifically to accommodate it or something), so I might try turning the helmet off.

I thought the X games were strategy games, but that looks very flight-sim-like. Is that particular to Rebirth, or have I completely misread the series from this distance?

Absolutely gorgeous shots all around, by the way. :D

The X games are space sims where you pilot ships, explore, trade, fight and build empires in a huge sandboxy galaxy, so there's certainly some strategy in there as well. They're all a bit wonky, and very German, but there are nuggets of gold in there for the patient.

Huh. How does the build empires part fit in along-side the pilot ships bit?

You can purchase and place space stations and factories, set up trade routes, hire automated independent traders, set up a fleets of ships and wage war to take over sectors in space and so on. There are some very solid systems to play around with, but there's an awful lot of wonk to get through before the possibilities of the games open up.

I haven't played the latest one at all yet, so I don't know what's changed other than just piloting a single ship (you used to be able to pilot anything), but from what I've seen the concept is the same.

Huh. Cool. Shame it's so rough-cut, then, I suppose.

I always find it hard to give an opinion on the X games. There's a lot of really cool stuff there and on paper they're the ultimate space games, but it's hard to recommend them without a lot of caveats. Still, if it sounds like a thing you'd like it's worth checking out, there isn't really much else like it out there.

May want to hold fire for a while squire. Game's desperately in need of some hefty patches.

IMHO you'd be better off getting an X3 pack with Albion Prelude and Terran Conflict. X3 Goldbox is 24,99Ä on Steam, and contains all three games.

Then, before you even think of playing the game, you go to the Egosoft forums and download some of the great mods (the cockpit mod is a must for me, and I usually get one of the complete overhauls as well) and install them.

Then, finally, you can't play the game. Nope. Go to YouTube and look for an X3 beginner's tutorial and watch it (I would also suggest downloading it, so you don't have to go looking for it every time you need to look something up). There are some really excellent tutorial series that will get you up to speed in no time at all. And with no time at all I mean three to four hours.

After doing that you can finally start the game. Pick the Humble Merchant start so you can sell off your tiny fighter and use your little merchant ship to start making some money. It takes a while to make money and get all the trading upgrades for your ship, but if you keep at it you'll soon have enough money to buy another ship and let the merchant ship do auto trading for you.

It takes a bit of work, but once you get into it, it is amazing. Building a huge trading empire and your own fleet of ships is really satisfying.

Combined with a sector take-over mod or war inspired mod you can control the whole known universe :D Before I got bored and stopped playing i controlled 60% of the galaxy and had wiped out both the Paranids and the Split :D Alien Scum!

If playing X3, do you say go Albion Prelude or Terran Conflict?

Also, LVX156 would you mind linking some of the better mods you recommend?
