    Official E3 1998 Coverage Thread

Since this year's E3 totally sucked, let's follow up on an E3 when it was awesome.

    *time warp to 1998*

Hello everyone and welcome to the official E3 1998 thread where we discuss what will be revealed on E3 this year, and what won't.

    GAMES TO WATCH
I heard Konami is being aggressive this year with two new and original game titles: Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill. This could be an indicator that Konami will buck the sequel trend and work on more cutting edge titles in the future. Any thoughts? Let's watch some trailers.
Metal Gear Solid E3 1998 Trailer
    Silent Hill E3 1998 trailer

Some unknown Scandinavian company called Remedy are debuting their first game, Max Payne. How will this turn out I wonder?
    Max Payne trailer

Blizzard came in strong with some kind of action RPG game titled Diablo 2
    Diablo 2 trailer

This might not have made a big splash, but it looks very promising. It's by a company called Valve. The game is titled Half-Life.
    Half-Life trailer

...and of course the most anticipated game of 1998, DUKE NUKEM FOREVER!
    the duke on E3!

    E3 INTRIGUE
Sega is keeping it close to the vest with their new console, the Dreamcast.

GT Interactive unveiled their Quake-killer, titled Unreal. Who will be victorious in this battle I wonder, Epic or Id? Only time will tell.
Epic are promising unrivaled 3D graphics, but no details on PC specs were released. Guess it's time to shell out on that new Voodoo II graphics card guys!
    Unreal trailer

Nintendo showed up with a trailer for Nintendo fanboy favourite Zelda. This time with a new entry to the series titled Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. Will Zelda survive the transition from 2D to 3D?

Zelda: The Ocarina of Time trailer - whoops, bit of a time warp glitch there!

Some other titles that weren't as big as the ones mentioned above but worth noting:
    Sony
    Syphon Filter

    Squaresoft
    Final Fantasy VIII
    Parasite Eve
    Xenogears

    Oddworld Inhabitants
    Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus

    Bungie
    Myth II

    Crystal Dynamics
    Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

    Interplay
    Fallout 2

    Sega
    House of the Dead
    Panzer Dragoon Saga

All in all, a pretty boring E3 this year guys, was expecting AT LEAST 50 new original titles like we used to expect in the early 90's. Let's hope things improve ten years from now!

    Dungeon Keeper 2! Thief!

EDIT: Was Ultima 9 ever released? I remember reading about it in Computer Gaming World at the time, but never actually saw it in stores.

Man, if only I had the money for a Voodoo 2! Well, my trusty Trident Blade3D and Celeron 333 will have to do for now :p

I have been hearing about a Glide version of the next title in EA's popular Need For Speed series, let's take a look:

wow, now that's what I call HD graphics!

Another interesting title that was debuted this E3 was Shogo: Mobile Armor Division

I'm sure my rig can't handle playing it in Hardware Direct3D mode, but can't wait :D

Uh, I remember that Anachronox was in the Quake 2 engine. Considering that DNF came out a couple of days ago... I think I have to sit down for a bit. This is just not right.

PS: Anachronox has 10th anniversary soon!

Yeah, it was ultimately released but as far as I remember from playing the Demo it was unoptimized like shit and full of bugs, it was constantly lagging on my GeForce256 at the time xD
Here's the Introduction in HD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wsFJa9VgWA&hd=1

EA ultimately fucked Origin (like they did with many studios and are continuing to do right now) over and cancelled both Ultima Online II and Ultima X
    Ultima X:

    Ultima Online 2:

Here's an article on why they cancelled two projects that might have been "World of Warcraft" before WoW even came out: http://www.gamestooge.com/2009/01/19...ima-x-odyssey/

I totally missed an opportunity to make this a 3 day reporting thing :(

I just saw this clip, it's '99 but it was too good not to share. Check out the first 40 seconds.

Great as the late 90's were for gaming, and all, it'd be interesting to see a list of the shit titles that debuted that year as well. I'm sure there were some now-long-forgotten stinkers on that convention floor.

    let me see...

    crap games:
movie franchise games like Fifth Element and A Bug's Life
    Ehrgeiz was complete crap.

it's kind of hard to remember the bad ones, while it gets easier to remember the truly great ones. Remember Grim Fandango? Baldur's Gate?? Freespace??? Falcon 4.0????

Nice timewarp! Love looking at things like this just to see how far those games ended up going. I'm with vinraith though, the failures are almost always more entertaining.

This thread his hilarious! I was too young to remember that Gamespot videos in 1999, but the best are those "unknowns" Warren Spector? Kaz Hirai? Gabe Newell? Hilarious! Also, PC as the primary platform?
EDIT:Atlus already existed? David FREAKING Bowie advertising Tomb Raider? Jake Lloyd(Anakin for those who didn't saw the prequels) in the Nintendo booth? EA Sports launching annualized sequels? Team Fortress 2? Star Wars was the COD back then? Gathering of Developers as a rebellion across the road form E3? Trickstyle!!

Ultima IX as someone mentioned. Probably made 1998's E3 worse than 2011's on its very own.

Eh? He was far away from being unknown in 1998.
