Looking for a game, where... (bit complicated)

You remember how in Homeworld you had a mothership, which essentially was your collosal core unit and in the campaign it was pretty much about travelling with it, producing units in it and defending it? Then again in Mass Effect (and KOTOR before) there was Normandy, which was your mobile base and home? Or, well, Battlestar Galactica is an example of this too, I guess.

Do you guys recall any other games where there would be similar sort of mobile fortress as permament element of gameplay and modus operandi for player when venturing into new areas?

Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun has two mobile command centres that are used in the campaign of both the NOD and GDI factions, but I seem to recall that they (the Montauk and Kodiak) are more often featured in the cut-scenes than in the actual gameplay.

I just started Drakensang: The River of Time. The first hour or so is based around a small riverboat and its crew, but I don't know how long that state of affairs will last. Either way, it's not been a huge part of the gameplay so far so it probably isn't what you're looking for anyway.

Space Pirates and Zombies starts you with a mother ship that produces your units and that you must move from system to system as you explore, though you never get to directly control it (I think).

StarScape, I think it was called? Fun little top-down space shooter thingy. I played the demo, never did get around to buying the full thing.

Urban Assault. (Link) On each map, you have your host station, from which you create your units (which you can then hop into to drive/fly) and defend by jumping into the turrets. If your host station is destroyed, it's game over. This game was hard as shit.

Conflict: Freespace and Wing Commander were both centered around capital ships that transported you to the various missions, but choice, if it was there at all, was very limited.

Hostile Waters bases you out of a carrier, which you can also use to launch artillery. I guess Carrier Command too.

X4 (or whatever it's called) looks like it may fit this, just.

FTL does this, and I'm sure most other space games do - you'll either have the one ship that you're controlling/protecting the whole time, or it'll be more like an RTS with a base and no mothership.

Do the Supreme Commanders do this? I haven't played them, but some of the screenshots make it look like there could be a central, mobile hub.

I'm sure I could think of more, but my brain isn't in gear properly.

It's been so long since I played Supreme Commander, but I think you're right. The (Armoured) Command Unit is one of, or the, most important/powerful unit of an army. That said, the army one can build can grow quite large, making the role of the ACU less important in comparison.

Thanks for the replies, I'll surely check all of the games you reccomended. I might have no specified this clearly enough but what I have in mind is some sort of space (or other) sandbox game combined with Stronghold, where you can just move your castle with you. But I guess games featuring that just dont exactly exist. :D

X4 (or whatever it's called) looks like it may fit this, just.
X3 is the newest part of the series I believe, though wasnt it just about flying a fighter? Got to check that one anyways, I missed all space-sims since Freespace 2 somehow... now, where's my Thrustmaster joystick....

X3 has plenty of capital ships available, and you can manage ships remotely to command whole fleets if you wish. Though it's not a fast game and it will take you some time to get to that point.

I assume he was talking about the upcoming X: Rebirth, where the player will have one main ship which can deploy drones for different tasks, and also dock with large capital ships which can be commanded from the bridge. It's still some way off and there's little info about it, but what there is can be found in the stickies here if you're interested.

Well, if you're going to discount Hostile Waters then there is clearly only one game that would perfectly fit your description:

    Battlecruiser 3000AD! *

*and the assorted remakes/updates that followed.

Pfft, they just update the graphics and add pointless first person shooter modes. And Universal Combat is basically BCM. And they removed time compression except as a cheat if I remember.

Chaos Gate - your Space Marines had a flying fortress taking them from planet to planet, even if you couldn't walk around in it you could visit the different rooms in there.
