I died three times to the hollows closest to Firelink Shrine :(

And I've probably watched more Dark Souls videos (since its release) than I've played any game, which frustrates me oh so much.

But after a bit of practice all is well and I breezed through them and Undead Burg and am now at Taurus. Should I try to kill the Black Knight close by or should I just kill Taurus and get the Drake Sword?

If you want to take him out, might I suggest you take the cheesiest strategy?
Firebombs make short work of anything that can't climb.

I would also caution against overdoing the guides and videos, this game is truly at it's best when you play it blind. Once you can start a character and get to, and kill, taurus and the black knight in the burg without too much trouble then you've probably got into the groove sufficiently to be able to deal with most situations the game throws at you.

But you need to be patient, watch the enemies, and time your attacks! Also, don't be afraid to reverse hollowing and summon help for bosses: plenty of people out there willing to help and if you're in the way of the white covenant (from the cleric at Firelink) you probably (probably!) won't get invaded.

For good players its a trivial boss, because it only take 3 hits to kill him jumping from the top, but this could be my last boss of the game if don't manage to kill him. I will probably be able to kill him if I continue tryiing and have a string of good luck, since is a weak boss.
Tei, try summoning a white phantom from the bonfire in undead rug. Should help you out.

Now that I've bought the game (take that, piracy = lost sale), I'm starting over with a Pyromancer. Just have to wait till it finishes downloading :(

And amateurscientist, I'm afraid I've watched multiple LPs since its Japanese release ;)

Why, because you can screw yourself over?

Besides, however many videos you watch, you just can't pick up the little subtleties here and there - for example I couldn't land a backstab until I found out you can't have your shield up to do it. And that's the most glaring one I've found yet.

If you kill the Black Knight while human you get a rather excellent sword, he's a bit tough though so get lots of firebombs (if you are a pyromancer it's fairly simple since you can just cast fireballs in his face.) or be prepared to step backwards a lot. That sword did me proud for quite a while.

The Black Knight was the bane of my existence until I learned to not block constantly and only actually get the shield up when I'm about to get hit to take advantage of much faster stamina regen when not blocking. Still took me three attempts, but I did beat him in a straight duel with nothing but Hollow Soldier gear and an unupgraded Longsword. I did do it as a human and I did get the sword, but seriously, 20STR 18DEX requirements? Good luck with that...

It'll take about 30 minutes to get enough souls to gain those stats and then you have a mighty sword, I thought it was worth it anyway. It kills the Taurus and Capra Demon in 2-3 hits or something silly like that and makes a lot of the parish and depths a simple task. The Halberd is also a goodie for countering other spear users, who were the bane of my life for a while.

Edit: Example of it's awesome, this guy isn't even trying to play smart.

If you want a really awesome sword, shoot the bridge Drake in it's tail.

I meant more in terms of exploration/discovery of new items/new beasties and such, and less in terms of tactics. In fact I heartily recommend getting a headstart on some of the more esoteric mechanics!

Picked this up at the weekend and have spent around 5/6 hours in it so far. Quite enjoying it, and even GFWL isn't causing me too many brain aneurysms. The combat reminds me, as it is virtually identical, to the Monster Hunter combat which is a good thing as I love those Monster Hunter games.

Playing at the moment a Dex-heavy build using Spears/Bows, things are going a lot better since I upgraded my Winged Spear to +5.

Not really sold on the bow to be honest, doesn't seem to be horribly effective as either things have a shield which makes it useless, or things move so fast you can only get one shot off, which will probably miss, before they're in your face.

I always thought Monster Hunter games were more dynamic(i.e. 20-foot jumps and shit).

You can kill the dragon ( the one above the gate ) with your 1000 arrows and get the Dragon sword which lets you steamroll through enemies. ;D

You don't need to kill the dragon(that's actually a wyvern by the way) to get the Drake Sword, you only need to shoot its tail off. You can do it safely from under the bridge.

Supposedly they fixed it in 1.05 and you cannot just plink it to death with 400 arrows, you need a good enough bow/arrows to outdamage its regen. But shooting the tail still works, and you can kill it later with its own tail for the lulz.

I am trying to enjoy Dark Souls, just something about it so far hasn't grabbed my interest. I am only at the start so maybe it gets better later on. I am really trying though. (I feel bad for not enjoying it for some reason. :( )

What do you mean? The lack of story and player motivation? The drab and generally boring environments and enemies? Almost complete lack of music and ambient sounds?

well make sure youre playing it with gamepad, makes all the difference in the world. at least for me it did. other than that maybe its just not your type of game.
DS actually reminds me of a game back in the 90s called Die by the sword. anyone remember that? it also had this intricate combat system and overall gameplay revolved around you trying/dying over and over again, learning patterns, enemies and whatnot.

The motivation for DS is success.

The environments are spectacular, unlike its forbearer.

The music is there when it needs to be.
