Lo and behold, Undead Burg/Parish is actually not dead silent. Who would've thought?

Yeah. I've been practicing more and more. I was dropping the shied down, but rushing it when it came to the stabbing.
Any weapon is fine. Basically just roll between his legs and get up the ladder , take an Estus if necessary at the top (but don't loiter) and then RB when you jump off onto the demon. Rinse repeat until you beat him (I think it took me 3 - 4 jumps). When you get beyond him and exit the next tower (roll over the barrels etc to find a secret soul) the door in front of you will be locked. Turn right and go speak to the NPC knight who tells you all about summoning and gives you some summoning chalk. The next bit is tricky, because you need to peg it down the wall which the big assed drake will set on fire (ignore the soldiers). Stick to the right and halfway down you'll find a staircase heading down. Off this will be two doors. One leading to a section under the bridge the other leading you back to a shortcut to the bonfire you were last at. Kick the ladder, so you can use it in future to get back and forth.

Alternatively, for the drake, run up to the first bit of black on the bridge (it is very close), then peg it off the bridge and round the corner and await your incoming soul avalanche.
This dodges the fire.
Almost finished this first playthrough now. Got all the souls I need, just moseying my way through painted world of aramis now (love that place). Then a touch of housekeeping, then onto NG+!
Man I just watched a Japanese speed run of the entire game in 35 minutes.... crazy stuff, but super impressive in a lateral thinking kind of way. Something he does at the beginning just completely flips my world view entirely. I doubt I'll be changing my approach (this dude had mad skillz) but needless to say there was some genius to it.

I've watched that video, what in particular blew your mind?
Also, I stumbled upon the cheesiest Havel strategy ever... lure him out of the tower, go down the steps a bit, wait for him to do one hit, and then he will walk back into the tower. When he's walking back, he will not attack again. Cue whaling on him with a strong weapon (Drake Sword 2h recommended). Rinse and repeat!
I'm around SL20 around Parish, but I'm not seeing any summon signs. I hope I have better luck nearer to the Gargoyles.
Incidentally, which stats should I focus on? (Faith build, hopefully a SunBro, using a Divine Claymore + elemental straight swords).

I never got around to Ash Lake on PS3. I just got there tonight. WOW. By FAR my favorite zone in the game. Beautiful to look at, epic music, awesome enemies, and the coolest NPC ever. I also finished Anor Londo, for real for the first time, for those who know what I mean. It was awesome from a story point of view.
"game sales for consoles destroys pc games completely why do u think they are so cheap on steam lol."

At the beginning you can make up for stats with weapon upgrades - +5'ing a weapon gives you a 50% damage bonus, Divine +5(super easy because Moonlight Butterfly is a joke and Green Titanite can be farmed in both Depths and Blighttown) is 300% damage total split between physical in magical.
You won't get good Faith scaling until Occult anyway, and that's Anor Londo... so I'd say work on VIT and END first.
I'm afraid of spending too many points on some stats. For example what's the max Dex I should aim for?

so finally got to blightown, didnt know what to expect. near the very first bonfire, a player message -"be wary of hope". few hours later i realize how accurate that was:D. there is no hope in this accursed place.
Bah! My blog is fulla bollox! What? Don't believe me?Here! Just look at it!
Specifically in Painted World.
STR and DEX - only as much as you need to use your weapons. Once you divinify/occultify your weapon all STR/DEX scaling gets to shit anyway.
@Kadayi: Killing NPCs earns you Sin. A lot of sin makes you a priority for people in Darkmoon Covenant. What NPC are you referring to? I don't recall any NPCs dropping shields at all, except for Oscar, but he won't drop it during your first visit to the Asylum.
Question for pros:
Is poison any good as a weapon? And if so any foes you find it particularly effective against?
@Mohorovicic
On the speed run the player just killed him straight away. Didn't even speak to him IIRC.

Regarding 'too much' in stats:
Str: A strength build probably ultimately wants 50, but let your gear establish minimum reqs, keep it creeping up from there.
Dex: Same as strength, but worth pointing out that spell casting speed caps at 45.
End: Max stamina at 40, just increase it as you feel the need for more. Worth getting into the 15-20 range early for a melee character in my opinion.
Vit: Diminishing returns make it not worthwhile after 40 or so. Increase it a bit if you feel fragile (for me that'd be if bosses are one-shotting me).
Int: The last sorcery spell requires 50, for pure damage scaling it's recommended to stop mid 40's.
Faith: Last miracle requires 50. Earlier on 30 is a good milestone, it allows sunbro entry and the req for Great Lightning Spear.
