I know toxin's pretty deadly and do much better damage than poison, overtime. Though, the Gravelord Sword is the only weapon I know of that has that.

I'm not a pro, but I use poison a lot.
It is somewhere between a good thing and the best thing.

I use it for taking out Sentinels in Anor Londo (3 hits at any range and they die, easy to stack it onto 6 of them at once), anything I'd kill with arrows normally (3 poison arrows at 100 souls each vs 10-20 Heavy arrows at 50 souls each) or just things I cba with.

Not so useful in PvP, I find.

    @Mohorovicic

On the speed run the player just killed him straight away. Didn't even speak to him IIRC.
Oh, that's just to save time, you can't get his gear until you fight him after he hollows out.

Struggling a bit with the Four Kings, got past them twice, first time on both occasions on the Xbox version as well! Rather than cursing the PC version for being harder I think it's the fact that as I've improved, I've put far less points in Vit & End. This is proving to be problematic against the Four Kings.

Four Kings throws a lot of players because you are always told that boss fights in Dark Souls are a marathon and not a sprint, but the Four Kings fight is honestly a sprint.

IIRC (no spoilers) the poison mist pyromancy is very useful against the Painted World boss, and has special utility there besides causing damage. Pyro's basics are also very useful in that map overall.

I tried using it against Havel, but it didn't seem to have any effect though perhaps I needed to get a few more shots on. However I definitely get your reasoning. If the gains from the target outweigh the cost then poison makes a lot of sense.

Can't be arsed with PvP tbh. I've only been invaded once personally so far (though I've been a phantom in someone elses game a couple of times had they've been invaded) and the dude who came in was stacked to the nines with elite gear and whipped me silly in a few seconds. Next time it happens I'm just going to make like I'm AFK tbh. Sure they get the kill, but I'm more into jolly co-operation and helping people out, than hindering them.

Yeah my bad. The video is pretty low quality, but you're right the dude was a knight already so he had a big shield from the start. Loved how he dealt with Lautrec though (I'm definitely trying that).

I must admit I've stayed away from magic and just concentrated on melee and ranged, however I am vaguely tempted to give the pyromancer a look see at some point.

I'll take a "maximum number of useful options" build over a specialist every time. You can't go wrong with having a few spell slots, some basic healing/buff and combustion/fireball/etc spells available at a moment's notice for trivial carry weight (and zero for Pyro glove). If you want to replay it from scratch a lot or do dedicated PvP, that's another story. Otherwise there's no good reason to limit your options, especially given how generously they buffed the soul payouts. They really could have gone purely classless with the game design too, and I was somewhat disappointed that they didn't (originally it was announced that way).

Some enemies are very painful to melee compared to flashcooking with combustion or napalming away with chaos fireballs. The extra speed or distance the Pyro toys can give you makes them invaluable.

Typical loadout for me is Gravelord Sword or Demon Spear and Bow in weapon slots, Tower Shield, Crest Shield or Dragon Crest shield and Pyro Glove as shields.
Gives me close and long range weapons, and pyro skills for mid range or anything I don't want to take in straight melee. Mostly I just used it for Combusting mozzies through the scaffolding in Blighttown. Fire Orb is also useful for the Painted World boss, for the same reason as above.

Anyone actually getting points from messages? I always try and leave really useful ones and I generally make a habit of big upping any sound ones (after all it's not like I'm negatively impacted by them) but I'm just not getting any points at all. Just curious as to whether others are problem? Also summoning is occasionally flaky.

Not getting any points either. I dunno if people just don't upvote, or if my messages are craptastic, though.

    That was brilliant!

Also, try leaving 'Praise the Sun' on top of towers and so on. Not very useful, but I got 4 upvotes on one message I left on top of the tower where you fight the Taurus Demon! Also try leaving 'I can't take this' around tough mobs :P

Don't like the Four Kings at all, mainly because of the distance you have to cover to get back if you mess it up!

Fortunately they're kind of cheesable in the first playthrough, they become really nasty in subsequent playthroughs . My tactic was - Havel's Armour, Black Knight Sword +5 (wielded two handed), with Grass Crest Shield on my back. Basically you run at the first king, hack the fucker down as quickly as possible, ignoring damage taken (Don't block or roll unless they're about to use the grab attack, save your stamina for attacking), chugging Estus when you're below 50% health, rince and repeat.

Thanks to you all in here I've now started dying again and again.

Since I was one of those who signed the Bandai petition, I thought it'd be kinda tasteless to wait until a Steam sale to pick this up.

Precisely what I felt, which is extremely weird as I'm a massive bargain hunter and cheaparse in general. I did buy it from Gamersgate for the blue coins, so far it has been well worth the price.

    Welcome to the slaughterhouse.

I never bothered to sign the petition (I basically foresaw every single complaint. Seriously, check the RPS comments :p) but I did get it at a discount from GMG. While I have been a bit distracted, the few hours I have been able to squeeze in have definitely reminded me why I love this series.

I just hope the inevitable third game goes back to the level-hub structure of Demon Souls, but keeps a lot of the convenience factors of Dark Souls. Like the estus flask over the white grass seeds or whatever the stuff I farmed was.

Eh, I prefer a "seamless" world. I especially love all the shortcuts in Dark Souls and how everything connects together - for example you can see The Great Hollow gigantotree from Firelink Shrine, or Duke's Archives from Sen's Fortress, it's a great thing.

Of course a world that is both seamless and still has a hub structure is entirely possible.

It's unbelievably satisfying to cheese Black Knights!

Undead Burg (Sword) = killed with arrows while being unhittable
Undead Parish (Greatsword) = lured into suicide using fire in the courtyard
Darkroot Basin (Halberd) = made him fall by blocking

I managed to get the Sword and the Halberd too. Result! I wish you could ascend the Black Knight Halberd into Divine :(
