Age of Decadence - Public Beta

Just saw this on my twitter feed. Almost forgot this game existed.

    Download link - https://rapidshare.com/#!download|50...eta.exe|269126

For those unaware AoD is a turn based RPG from Iron Tower Studios , masterminded by Vince D. Weller (formerly one of the loudest critics of modern RPGs over at the RPGCodex). It's set in Ancient Rome and all looks rather tactical and lovely. RPS did a great interview with Vince a while back (shit, that was 4 years ago!?): http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008...ince-d-weller/

Woo! I too had forgotten about this, but now I remember that I wanted to try it.

Is it still single character turn-based or did they change their mind and make it multi-character?

Pretty sure it's still single character. From what I've seen it's very similar to Fallout, both in terms of combat and in the way it gives you multiple solutions for quests depending on your character build.

Conceptwise, it's pretty much exactly what I want out of an RPG, so I'm defnitely excited about giving this a try.

Playing now. It's interesting and hard and fun and I can see why it's taking them so long.

I played it. Very Fallout-esque. Played 3 characters and failed within 10 minutes each time! Yay!

I'm still downloading too. Does anybody know how much content there is in the beta?

Because I sort of want to play this all night.

Theres 3 areas you can access, with fairly similar quests. However, each class has a different role in this community and as such deal with each quest in a totally different manner. Thief, you steal stuff. Merc u kill stuff. Trader you trade stuff etc.

I love how insanely difficult this is. And yet, apart from one fight where I missed a 30% chance for a finishing blow 8 times in a row and then died, every time I fail it feels like it's my own fault.

That said, I wouldn't mind a LITTLE bit more skillpoints to start out with....

Got it yesterday. It has alot of promise, I recommend it to everyone, I went the torrent route. However they still need to do the rest of the game about 75% or so I think, so don't expect the full game for a few years yet.

I've only played a little while but my biggest problems are UI problems like not having being able to close screens with the same button you open them with and having the text and choices on different ends of the screen which leads to my eyes ping-ponging up and down the screen.

Yeah, I'm hearing of a lot of problems with the UI and accessibility... Fonts being unreadable at certain resolutions, no consistency in interface design, too little information given to the character. I'm going to give it a spin... but they should really get the accessibility problems fixed. Truly is unforgivable of a PC game in this day and age.

How long do you reckon until a full release? I've been following AoD for ages but don't feel up to a beta

I tried this, got to the first fight and failed hilariously as my shitbird warrior flailed pathetically with his shield while getting stabbed a lot. Back to the drawing board.

Read about this long ago and downloaded a demo once too. Nice to see that it's still being worked on.

I've only played for a few minutes but it looks interesting.

Too bad I don't really have the patience for these kinds of games anymore. But who knows, maybe I'll get into this anyway.
