    Decent COD Clones

Are there any COD clones that anyone would recommend? As well as being a fish, COD is massively overpriced (and the last two incarnations don't sound particularly good anyway), so I won't be trying it out any time soon.

In which terms do you really need to stick to "CoD clones"? Modern warfare manshootishness?

Also, do you mean SP or MP?

Yeah modern warfare style, single player. I kind of get to thinking that there must be a good example of that style of game somewhere, without all the bullshit trappings that usually come with the genre.

    How does multiplayer COD fare?

Wasn't there a CoD sale on Steam days ago?

Medal of Honor and Bad Company 2.

There was a sale for COD but £15 for a game that is over 2 years old seems a bit too much.

I don't regard cod innovative enough to consider copyable.

What's there to copy? Guns, soldiers, terrorists? I've recently been playing cod clone rainbow six 3, except you lead a team of 10. Or is it the regenerating health? Halo is an interesting cod clone...

So yeah, what is a cow clone?

I was thinking along the lines of a single player FPS with some nice set-pieces. Something like HL2 I suppose, but a bit more action and a bit more modern.

Hmmm the only man shoot I have enjoyed recently was Fallout 3 (with a metric ton of mods) but thats probably not quite what you had in mid.

Come to think of it Crysis was also very good and the only FPS I have played recently.

If it doesn't need to be FPS I'm loving splinter cell conviction, I will suggest rainbow 6 Vegas despite the 2 games having terrible ending areas. If the game must be first person? Why must it be linear, do you suffer from a lack of imagination? Stalker and Crysis are the first FPS I'd point you at.

Rainbow Six Vegas is a fun, near-future manshoot. The cover system is superb and the environments are nice.
Bad Company 2 is also a manshoot, but the twist is that you can also shoot buildings.
You might have already played it, but if World War 2 hasn't tired you out, Call of Duty 2 is still excellent, and you can say you like it without people shouting at you for being a 'CoD-moron' and supporting The Man.

Yeah, R6 Vegas would be my suggestion for a good, solid, high-quality militaristic manshoot. The cover system is genuinely excellent. Some of the AI less so, but I certainly got my fiver's worth out of the sequel, and I bought the first game since then in a sale.

If you play on hardcore don't bother trying to finish either game. They are balanced on the assumption you are playing on normal/easy.

Oh, and Vegas 2 is better but it at one point it takes away your sqaud, introduces snipers that can kill you before you can see them (third person camera issues) becomes really obvious you are tripping spawn triggers and becomes a twitch shooter by denying you effective cover... oh and a boss battle your character decides to take on alone... a boss battle in rainbow six. *sigh*

That is an absolutely and utterly idiotic statement, Helio. You're being silly.

CoD's SP is: linear, fast-paced, over-the-top-setpiece-based and semi-realistic (more like "semi" - real-world weapons, but as of MW2 onwards none of it makes any sense). It's a Michael Bay film in video game form. You're entitled to not like it, but claiming that it does nothing different from any other FPS is ridiculous.

No other FPS series does all of those bits at once that I know of, although the new Medal of Honour tried. If you want semi-realistic and linear, you can go for R6V2. If you want semi-realistic, linear and setpiece-based, you could try BC2's (pretty rubbish) SP. If you want linear and setpiece-based and really good, you could go for Metro 2033, although it doesn't have CoD's emphasis on shooting things (and isn't semi-realistic).

The section you have to tackle without your squad I found to be genuinely tense- and I had little issue with cover on the routes I took, but I was playing as a sneaky-bastard type with a silenced sniper rifle.

But yes, the boss battle at the end was pretty damn stupid and should have been solvable with a single headshot.

Doesn't stop the rest of Vegas 2 from being excellent, however.

Don't get me wrong, while I'm glad that not all FPS are monorails like COD4 I really like it, didn't get the others due to backlog. I'm no hater. Indeed I believe that COD4 is a master-class in its FPS sub genres of scripted shooter and CQC arena shooter, I also enjoyed COD 1 and 2 for what its worth, but COD2 multiplayer was too spammy.

Its probably my fault for not dialing down the difficulty.

Absolutely, consider it praise with faint damning.
