hello there! i've got the hankering for a new GPU in the next few months and i plan on getting a GTX580... the thing is, i'm not especially good at the hardware side of things... so i was wondering if anyone could tell me if said GPU will run (?) on an i7 with 6GB of memory? i can't seem to get a definitive answer when haphazardly googling... perhaps it is a stupid question?
Post a full set of specs: Power supply, processor (more detailed), RAM (DDR2, DDR3?), budget, etc.
Alternatively, use speccy and post your budget.
GTX580 + i7 + 6GB ram is a good combination, you'll have a mighty PC :)

You need to make sure your power supply can handle all that. Make sure your power supply is at least 500w
Any gpu will run with that - your choice of processor and ram generally won't affect what GPU you have to get :).so i was wondering if anyone could tell me if said GPU will run (?) on an i7 with 6GB of memory
The only times you might need to take it into account is if you get a really rubbish cpu, there's no point getting a really good gpu as your cpu will bottleneck. Or if your motherboard doesn't support crossfire or sli.
With an i7 (x58 or sandybridge), especially if you overclock it at some point, you may as well get the best gpu you can within your budget. Stating a budget at this point would be useful :)!!
Also - depending on your current graphics card - you should take into account that those fancy modern cards are pretty big. Make sure your case has enough space, a GTX 580 will take up the space of 2 PCI-E slots and most likely be ~40cm long.

580 GTX is about 27-28cm long and should fit in most 'gaming' grade cases.
ok thanks guys, here's some more details as asked... the budget, which will be greatly enhanced by delicious tax returns, is about $500 - $600 (au dollars... not sure what that is in pounds?)
the processor is a quad core i7, 2.67GHz... it also says processor 920 on the box? the RAM is DDR3... apparently the power supply is inside the case? i don't think i even own a screwdriver... does that mean i'm no longer welcome at fight club?
actually, lets make that budget go up to $750...
just so you know, when you get a new GPU, the only things you really need to be concerned about are your power supply, and whether or not you have enough space inside your case
so if you posted your powersupply, and perhaps your case as well then we could give a better answer
If you're willing to go the SLI/Crossfire route (put up with some problems sometimes caused by SLI/Crossfire, that is), you can save a lot of money. I just recently purchased two Galaxy GTX 460's for $130 USD apiece, minus a $50 rebate for each, making the grand total around $170 - $180 including shipping, etc. If you'll look here, http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/...s_460_1gb_sli/ , you'll see that two GTX 460s at a max resolution of 1920x1080 and AA lower than 8x best a GTX 580, for about 1/3 the price.
Now I know some people will say that SLI/Crossfire with cheaper cards doesn't leave room for upgrade, sometimes have difficulties, etc. etc., and they would be correct, but personally, the performance of a GTX 580 for 1/3 the price gives me much more room for other things. Also, there are similar deals to the 2x GTX 460s - that was just an example.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that with advancements in SLI/Crossfire scaling, along with the very cheap price of high end GPUs, SLI/Crossfire is a very viable option. I know about the $750 price range, I just bought my new PC for less than that. It's a Cooler-Master HAF 922, Asus P8P67 Pro, i5-2500k, 8 GB DDR3 1866, 2x GTX 460 SLI, and Corsair 750w PSU.
I feel pretty confident it would stand up to any single GTX 580 system at 1920x1080 or lower, and I saved around $300 on the GPU!

ok, is it safe then to say 500w is enough power? i know the case has big enough slots for the 580... if i get an idea of how much wattage is enough i'll leave you all alone.
Oh, I was under the impressions that they're as long as my rusty GTS 450 which is indeed 40cm long. It seems to depend on the manufacturer and if they decide to put 2 cooling fans on it.
Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't risk it. Personal preference, more than anything, though.
Sorry to pull this a bit off topic but I was under the impression no card significantly over 30cm has ever been made (the longest I know are the 4850X2 and the 6990 both at about 30cm - EDIT: also 5970 @ 31cm!). What kind of monster non-reference GTX 450 do you have :p?!! Also it would struggle to fit in any case on the market at 40cm (10cm longer than an A4 sheet).
To OP: depends completely on what PSU you have. A 500W corsair or seasonic will cut it easily. Other makes, especially cheaper ones, will absolutely not be enough. One 500W PSU =/= another 500W PSU, and the power output of the cheaper ones is unreliable and rubbish.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd stick my own GFX card dilemma in here. Got a budget of about £140 for a new GFX card. Upgrading from a 8800GTS so anything will be a big upgrade methinks.

well i opened up the box and here are the results, which i don't understand... it says the AC input is 750w continuous; the DC output says the +3.3 and +5V are 30A with 160w max; the +12v's (4 of them) are all 18A with 648w max and all together it says 727.8w max. does this make sense? the brand is Delta.
You'd have to split the 6pin/8pin across two rails - can you take a picture of the sticker on the PSU? AC input should be in V and Hz not W
