just to reassure everyone that I have close to zero mmo knowledge: how does this actually work once the game is on? do we all have to chat up the OP or is there an "apply for guild" command or how does this work?

You're not the only one on that count so perhaps I've been too vague. However to serve it up on a platter is too nice, you need to work for it dammit!

That's a good question, and the short answer is I'm not sure as not had the chance to play alongside others as yet.

From this excellent primer:

Guilds can be created the second you are out of the opening cinematic. Hit “G” to create a guild or to represent/stand down from a guild.

As for inviting people to a guild, I don't know if you have to be standing near each other or if it can be done remotely. I believe I read somewhere that the invitee has to be online at the time, at least. It may just be a case of Timofee sorting the guild out then sending whispers all over :P

Re-roll another next time you get in, I'll be doing so as I plan on trying numerous classes.

Also the first open world event in the human zone was a slideshow for me.

Me too - in for fifteen minutes then kicked out and can't get back in. Oh well. Fun while it lasted, though it may take a while to get used to the bounding charr movement.

My ID is Boots.3874, please can I too have a guild invite when it's set up.
