    Idle speculations on Wasteland 2

Here's a thread to ramble away on what you think will happen in the saga of the upcoming Wasteland 2.

Personally I think we are in very good hands as far as story, dialog-trees and game world goes. I fully expect the game to deliver solidly in that area. The artwork (NPC portraits/menu backgrounds ect.) as well looks set to be fantastic. I'm hoping it's incorporated in the same way the artwork was used in the excellent Armageddon Empires.

Where I think the game might have troubles in being mediocre or actually outright bad is in the combat system. It seems unlikely that they'll just use similar mechanics to other games like Wasteland, Fallout or Jagged Alliance. Fargo seems to be in a very innovative mood right now. I'm thinking he wants to pull something completely new out of his hat in this area.

And hello, by the way, gents. Long time reader of RPS and have just started posting in your forums.

Style- and design-wise, I like that. Also, the music is so relaxing. Hah.

Wasteland was a lot wackier than Fallout 1 and 2. The Fallout games made at least some attempt at being realistic about the apocalypse; Wasteland did not really give a fuck, so you had giant bunny rabbits catapulting radiation enlarged vegetables at you.

For the record, Fallout was meant to be Wasteland 2

That's not actually true. It's as much a sequel to Wasteland as Bioshock is a sequel to System Shock. In fact less so, since Fargo didn't work on Fallout.

I truly hope it will be quite similar to the olden Fallouts. This have been one of my dreams for some years, that a decent developer brings back the isometric turn-based style of RPGs.

He means that they originally intended to make a sequel to wasteland, but made Fallout when they couldn't get the rights.

Hey, was Wasteland the game you had to have a canteen when you went into the desert or your guys would start dying? At which point you could take their stuff and get more guys.

They've released their vision document today, and it's an interesting read:

Really high hopes for the game!

Nothing too new for people who have been following everything Fargo's been saying so far, but it's good to see all of that in an official document. I'm really looking forward to it.

That's a bit more colorful that I expected. Not a bad thing, just pointing it out.

Time to go indulge myself on the lamentation of the Codex.

Looks better than I expected, the scorpion is pretty cool. Also it's a little colourful compared to other post-apocalyptic games.

I don't know why but it took me forever to spot that giant scorpion for some reason.

Yeah, it's approaching Krater levels of color, which I think is too much. I though Fallout 1-2 were maybe a touch too drab, though pretty beautifully drawn; hopefully they'll find a good balance. The green fog in that shot is kinda goofy.

Looks really good so far. The original Wasteland was a colourful game as well, so I don't mind the somewhat cartoonish art style. If anything, I hope they make the Scorpitron more colourful as it's kind of hard to make out against the background at the moment.

Though the thing that intrigues me most about this picture is the ladder. I hope it's useable in the actual game, different elevation levels would add a lot to the tactical depth of the combat system.
