Life got serious and tedious again so I have had to put aside the delights of New Vegas for a happier time.

Not sure if I'll be able to play much over the next month but if I do I've earmarked sessions for cathartic shooting of things, so decided to give RAGE a second chance and also bought Dead Island GOTY for 4 quid for the same purpose.

Also managed to adjust the sliders on Fifa and have got a fairly realistic game of foot-to-ball going, it's a real pleasure now when you get some momentum going.

Surgeon Simulator 2013 crashes non-stop. I never get to remove the stomach because it just keeps crashing.
I'll switch to offline in my Steam friends list because I don't want to annoy people with constant "SirKicksalot is playing SS2013" and try again...

I recently discovered Astats.nl, and based on that I'm replaying Half Life 2 because of how close I am to getting 100% achievements. I know, achievements are generally worthless, but when backed by a good statistics aggregate like Astats I find them oddly compelling. I have the same problem with PS3 games and PSNprofiles.com.

I'm not playing anything now, that's the problem. Hoping to grab StarDrive soon (if the late game issues are fixed), and Sleeping Dogs or Lords of Football caught my eye, but they're both a little too expensive when all I'm basically looking for is something to kill time. So an old game from my shelves then? King's Bounty calls to me, or possibily Jade Empire. Still haven't gotten past the first town on that. Or I could pay a visit to GoG and buy a new old game.

Freespace 2 looks interesting. I haven't played it before, but did play the fanmade Wing Commander Saga which was modded from Freespace.

Play it, it's great (don't know how it translates to mouse and keyboard, only ever played it with joystick). The capital ships are immense.

Is it story-driven? Does it have space poker?

Jade Empire isn't a great game by any means but playing it as an evil bastard has many (unintentionally) hilarious moments. Some quest resolutions are so incredibly evil and often with no benefit for your character that it comes over as black comedy. The game rarely acknowledges your karma meter and basically everyone still treats you like a hero and not like the bane of all living things that you really are. It makes the dark side options in KotoR look downright subtle in comparison.
It also has one of the best plot twists there is and that's sadly just about the only thing it has going for it, besides the rather original setting maybe.

Freespace 1 and 2 are entirely story driven. And by that I mean story driven in that you are just another cog in the war machine. You are and always will be just another pilot. Its very different to modern day gaming's need to have a heavily personalised avatar. And to the game's credit, much of the story happens in real time during missions a whole six months before Half Life 1 came out.

Its a wonderful space opera, with excellent combat mechanics and creates a wonderful sense of time and place as well as excellent ai and variety of ships and weapons. And the second game has arguably the greatest explosions in any game ever. Not to mention some of the most frantic capital ship vs. capital ship combat i've ever seen. DEM LASERS!

I've posted on the games before and am very familiar with the series so feel free to bang away with questions.

I don't think I used that. I may have to reinstall the whole thing, which would involve re-downloading that stupid 7GB D&D Collection, which kind of puts me off the whole business.

I hate the idea of trying to plan out a game before I know what it's going to throw at me, and I rarely find a game I like enough to replay it.

For the IWDs it is pretty simple as you are making the whole party.

The BGs (and later NWNs and DAs) are a bit harder as you have to rely on the game giving you people to fill each role.

That being said, the extent of my research is mostly just to make sure there are good weapons of a specific type (if I am rolling a character who needs a good weapon). So that just means skimming the weapon list or, in the case of the excellent AL series for NWN1, just asking the creator "Hey, is it worth rolling a barbarian who uses greataxes?"

Honestly, even for Baldur's Gate, it's pretty easy to end up with a very functional party even if you go out of your way to do a silly character. There are many companions to recruit to fill up every roles and they're tolerant enough that you can even mix up alignments for a while without too much trouble unless you go in the extremes.

Baldur's Gate II does have a somewhat lacking cast of pure arcane casters, though.

It's more the stat rolls and mix/max specialization that turn me off of it. I'm very much stuck in the JRPG/Final Fantasy Tactics mindset where every characters can pretty much do anything and everything, given enough grind. I guess I like the power trip more than I do the actual tactics and planning that attract most people to CRPGs in the first place. It shouldn't really come as a surprise that I LOVED the Sphere Grid from FFX. And Blitzball. And I was in middle school, so shut up.

(I'm assuming by DAs you're referring to something other than Dark Alliance?)

I keep going back to Rage but I'm wondering why I'm bothering...

Most games have some sort of thing to aim at - a badguy to depose/catch/kill, skills to hone or levels to gain or whatever.

Rage seems to skip all of that and is simply self-contained - you get a tonne of missions, each of which simply earns you money/unlocks more weapons.

The 'skill' of the game is in remembering to buy the shitload of ammo you'll need I think - otherwise it just feels like a self-fulfilling slog with no actual reason to be doing it?

Right now I'm working through Dead City, dealing with unspeakably nasty things just to give myself a better defib. - the one I have has done me fine thusfar so clearly I'm doing this so it can give me even harder things to do.

Why didn't I just take up drinking and gambling like the rest of the remains of the human race again?

Also - I've finally seen what people grumbled about, I thought the game looked OK until I reached Dead City but I now have the awful textures and other crap which makes me feel vaguely like I'm in a Dali painting brought to life...

If you want my advice: the Dead City boss fight is the perfect high note to end the game on if you don't feel like playing any more of it.

The "rocket launcher against a fish in a barrel" one? Not a high point in boss fights, I must say...

Also 'Dead City' would be better renamed 'Dead Corridor' ;0
