I did the Split/Second singleplayer campaign and remember no real issues with it - a few retries when I got something wrong - it was otherwise fun - from memory at least.

It was basically what a SEGA arcade racer would be if they still made them...

ah. I mostly liked that, but I think it was my first newer HOG game too and my expectations weren't very high at all, so I felt I got a pretty decent deal.

It's not like I play a whole lot of them, mainly what seeps down through bundles, the reason I hated it is I kept feeling like the whole thing was squarely aimed to the other gender, in that way that I find utterly annoying of "how look how we women are so much level-headed and capable and ultimately better than men".

Cursed Heart has you in the role of a mother trying to save her daughter, but that mostly fades in the background, and you're left with a villain that is not really a villain, and how things went all wrong. Not anything mind blowing but I thought the twist was nice and the way the whole thing was handled was more than clever enough.

And here we are seriously discussing HOGs, the hardcore gamers' kittens must be dying by the dozen now. Bwahahaha.

Split/Second is the best game ever to play on LAN. theForges is right though, I spent a tremendous amount of time on the singleplayer trying to unlock every car and it was hard as fuck, the AI is cheating constantly and the difficulty curve is as artificial as it gets.

Had a few game snacks recently. Finished Spate, not sure I'd recommend anyone play it, it's a platformer with physics bits, flappy bird bits and terrible checkpointing at times, its a nice narrative concept but honestly the designer should make machinima not games.

I also finished the "free DLC" thing for Thomas Was Alone, it got a little bit VVVVVVV at times but honestly it was enjoyable, narrated nicely and quickly finished.

I tried to get into Flotilla but its so fearless about completely screwing you over that it was hard to invest into. Pair of regenerating dreadnoughts in my first battle? Why not.

Cat Lady is all kinds of stressful narratively, but I still want to keep going with it, I don't want spoilers but I'm really wondering how much my choices mattered.
I'm failing to writing a blog, specifically about playing games the wrong way

I tried 'Lifeless Planet' - I'd heard it was a 'press W to win' game but I liked the idea and I can take a bit of 'press W to win' if there's some narrative or atmosphere around it.

So far it - err - it's OK. The frustrating bits aren't as frustrating as I was led to believe, the floaty platforming is ALMOST believable as "you are in a clunky spacesuit" (tho it falls into "just sloppy coding" a bit more often than I'd like it to)

Only downside thusfar is that I missed something and found myself in a total dead-end, there was NO clue WHATSOEVER that I'd walked past a major item quite a bit earlier - I'd have banged-my-head on that forever without a tip from someone (which was basically 'backup to the start of that bit and look around')

I'm sure the ending/reveal will be a bit weak but it's a brave idea and I'm not sure tighter platforming or more 'stuff to collect' or anything like that wouldn't just have made it overlong or whatever...

    Finished Doom 3 BFG.

    - Doom 3: apart from more ammo and a faster Doomguy, I couldn't tell what was changed. Aged better than HL2 and Far Cry. I guess it got the last laugh after all.

    - Resurrection of Evil: they changed the sewer section... for the worse. In the original version you had a hazmat suit and had to grab oxygen from dead zombies. The sound and visuals were awesome. It was a highlight of the game. Now you don't use the suit and it's just a run-and-gun section.

    - The Lost Mission: The Mars City levels are business as usual. The final Hell levels... holy shit. The next-gen fantasy Quake experience I always wanted! There's an early section very reminescent of the classic Doom levels, but that's quickly abandoned. The rest is 100% pure Quake and I love it.

Yeah that's what I thought too, but I basically steamrolled the rest of the game. I should probably have run some extra dungeons for more xp and gear, but I was getting a bit tired of the game, so I just wanted to finish it. If I'm ever going to play a diablolike again, it'll probably be Torchlight II anyway :)

So I finally tried Dust: An Elysian Tail, thinking "Ah, come on, stop bitching, the art can't really be that bad; lots of internet people seem to like it". Then the game started and inside thirty seconds I thought "Jesus Christ, yes it is" - seriously, I could see there was a reasonably decent hack-and-slash fighting system in there, and I know, I know, one guy did all this blah, blah, blah but my God the art is just... really not particularly good. It's a mediocre DeviantArt furry artist's account come to life - horrid proportions, lifeless, washed-out colour, stilted animation - nothing worthy of praise on an aesthetic level at all.

"Cool story, bro" time: maybe I'd have changed my mind given time but then it killed my PC. It was running very badly anyway - this is going to sound like I'm making excuses for a dying rig or something, but the only other game that's recently given me this much grief would be Bioshock 2 before they took out GFWL. This was worse, really - it was running far more sluggishly than a simple 2D side-scroller should ever be, and when it went into a thirty-second loading pause with no signs of stopping I decided I'd had enough. Then the fun started - I tried to alt-tab out and it hard-locked my PC. Waited, wouldn't come back. Finally reset, Windows wouldn't start. Safe mode wouldn't start. It tried startup repair of its own accord and failed. Finally got to turn it off, started it up again, hallelujah, Windows loaded - only I'd got no internet. Ended up poking around in device manager to find my ethernet card had been knocked out with a Code 31 error and my wireless wasn't working either.

My rage at this point is best left to the imagination.

So, yeah, fuck Dust, to be blunt. I know, I know, it's probably just One Of Those Things any PC owner has to contend with every now and then, but still, never playing that game again. On the upside, I have Windows 8 now, and my PC appears to be back to normal, so hey, wasn't all bad.

Agreed, and I liked the twist too. It was of generally higher quality than the others I've tried, so maybe it's worth keeping an eye out for that dev in the future.

What age are you that anthropomorphized animals equates to furries? Did you grow up on 4chan? None of the characters in Dust are sexualized in any way.

I didn't love Dust, it was an ok metroid style game with a not so great story, good combat and a bad last level and boss and some very hit or miss voices, but the art of that game is good.

Gave Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP another try. Or a try, I guess, considering it crashed after the start screen on my old system.
Awkward control system (what is it with tablet ports that use double-click when single-click would have worked better?) and the constantly moving graphics made me kind of nauseous. Then I ran into a wolf that apparently was impossible to hit with the sword and blocking with the shield didn't hurt it, so I died. The Enb.
It looks interesting, but I don't think I have the patience to put up with the awkwardness of the mechanics.

Oh, please. I do so love this knee-jerk defensiveness - he said furries! He must be suggesting the developer's some kind of twisted sexual deviant! I wasn't implying all furry art is automatically porn (or even that the porn is necessarily "wrong", though that's a whole other argument) - I am saying the art in Dust is hardly any better than that produced by your average geeky teenager on the internet with a smattering of talent, who likes to express themselves by drawing endless generic fantasy vignettes, but wants all their characters to be squirrels or whatever for some reason. The chorus of praise for it seriously baffles me - the idea it's Disney-esque in any way is laughable (and a quick Google shows me yes, that word has been thrown around a few times). Drawing cartoon animals with a lot of frames of animation might take a ton of effort but it doesn't automatically mean you're as good as the Nine Old Men.

EDIT rather than new post because it's a spammer below me:

Heh, I knew someone would say that. I'm not as opposed to Metro as some, and it's certainly starting much faster than 7 was. It, uh, certainly is weird getting used to the Start menu, though, or Start screen, or whatever the hell they call it now.

It just baffles me that people have such strong reactions to a particular brand of generic popular fantasy art style when it does not result in any way in a bad-looking game. The worst I could say about it is that it's characterless, but it's as legitimate as going for an 8-bit retro throwback art style, only in this case people can't accuse it for being picked out of laziness.

I'd forgotten how incredibly smarmy you are.

Perhaps you just dislike the art style of anthropomorphized animals used, since you seem to equate his work to that of "average geeky teenager on the internet" which is a great way to brandish an art style. The reason people compare it to Disney is not because the guy is the next member of the nine old men, but rather because his style does resemble that of Robin Hood, An American Tail, Talespin and other cartoons that they don't really make any more since the idea of talking animals was replaced. Is it as good as all those? No. Particularly when it comes to the facial animations of which all the characters have very few of and end up using the anime style of having a couple of frames repeat over and over.

But where the animation and art style do work, and why most people praise it is in the actually gameplay and combat.

If you don't like that style then that's fine, but saying that it's bad animation and badly drawn is just not true.

IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE. TAKE THIS.

(And uninstall all of the shitty built-in apps that yank you by force to the "Metro UI" - you'll get all the benefits from the new Windows 8 engine with all the functionality of the Windows 7 interface.

Also, I'd avoid the 8.1 update like the plague... but YMMV.)

Wait, you didn't bump up the difficulty level before starting? The default is regarded by most as way too easy, but the game in no way suggests that it is the case; it isn't challenging in any way so steamrolling is probably the experience you would get.

Uhm? IIRC double click is for fast movement, you should be using a single click most of the time unless you're going from point A to point B. In that regard it's pretty much PnC standard.

It's clear you're feeling so strongly about the game, and I remember your posting extensively about it before, so much I thought you had played it already. The whole furry thing is something I refuse to approach, even assuming it is there IMO it's one of those artist VS art thing, in other words I'd rather just play the game and decide whether I like it or not, while knowing the bare minimum about Mr. Dodrill or anything else.

In the replies you have received I honestly couldn't see any knee-jerk reaction, more like perplexity. Comments to the effect of 'horrid proportions' might make sense to you, but I'm sure you can see how most people wouldn't find statements like those to be anywhere close to truth. Even more understandable criticisms will still sound ingenerous or even nitpicking in the light of Dust being basically the product of one man's work over many years.

In other words, while you're putting thought and an analytical eye into your commentary, at the same time yours is sounding like the knee-jerk reaction. This is all of course not meant to say you should play the game, or even like it. Quite the opposite really.
