After the wonder of rediscovering Doom with a few (freeking ace) mods and custom WADs I thought Duke Nukem 3D would be the next logical choice.
Its still a good game, just no-where near as good as my memory led me to believe.

You'll get it, don't worry. I killed her on a playthrough that wasn't even going that well for me (I think I only managed it because I found an item that teleported me to her - otherwise I'm sure I would have died on the way).

I really dislike it. It's a shame. I wanted to like it, I really did. Nice concept, appealing presentation, platform based puzzles; all looked well.

Unfortunately I'm finding it an exercise in frustration. I get that it's designed so that part of the puzzle is to hit all the nodes in a room without leaving it. Fantastic, great. Only I don't know where the exits are initially do I? So I can spend a bit of time figuring out a puzzle only to fall through an exit which then has me falling through several other bloody rooms, putting me miles away from the puzzle I'd almost figure out. Fan-bloody-tastic, that's obviously just what I wanted! Plus the controls often lag slightly meaning that an attempt to move a single space to light up a node nearby an exit sees the character careering into the next room undoing any work I've done. Hooray!

Also unless I'm missing something obvious there's a certain degree of luck involved. The whole losing nodes when you teleport thing seems arbitrary at best (I assume unveiling more blocks makes you less likely to lose a node on teleporting but what gets lost seems completely arbitrary leading to lots of cycles of me teleporting again and again, hoping to get the outcome I want but having no clue whether it's actually going to be the case.

Not to mention the rather unhelpful map system.

So as much as I want to like it I can't recommend it, though lots of people seem to rather enjoy it so maybe I'm just being a bit dense/suffering from control lag that others don't see. Would definitely recommend trying the demo first, I don't grudge buying it as it was very cheap but at that same time I'd rather have bought something else!

    ---

And just so this whole post isn't negativity (I don't like being negative, me), I've also been playing Stacking which is as lovely and charming as everyone says it is.

Were I any more tongue-in-cheek I'd probably categorize various sub-genres of "indie" game as

    - Graphical UI for music collection
    - "art" game

Re-reading John's Wot I Think (as I was wondering why he liked it so much!) I now realise I was missing the fact that it's the blocks around you which disappear. Which makes a lot of sense and has encouraged me to stick with it a while longer, though my other points still stand (oh and those enemy things are bloody annoying, I've no idea how to deal with them and whether the game will give me anything to do so!). I've decided that the game's weakness is in not laying it's ground rulse particularly clearly (how hard would it have been to make the "blocks beside you disappear when you teleport thing" so explicit that it was impossible to miss in the way I did?). It's possible to be bastard hard while still introducing the basic puzzle elements in a relatively simplistic manner (see Spacechem).

Anyway, may have been unduly harsh on this, will soon find out!

Spent an hour or so on Gemini Rue and am surprised to find no silly vague item puzzels. Thus far the usage of items makes sense.

The first time I played it, I didn't like the sudden change of setting. That and combat, but I got used to it.
