Except the final "boss battle" they were all all terribubble, but I do like this take on the third.

Speaking of boss battles, if I though some of Darksiders' mini bosses were tedious I should have perhaps been prepared for the main ones.

The boss of the first dungeon just has a ludicrous hit bar (of course you can't see 'em so I just don't know how ludicrous) and is a tiresome was of attrition that on losing had me quitting in disgust at the thought of going through it again. Sapped a lot of the goodwill I had towards the familiar feelings of wandering dungeons, solving puzzles, smacking things with swords and finding cool new toys to play with.

Can anyone who has played it tell me if it gets better or if (as I fear it shall) gets worse? A tedious health sponge that feels up there with the latter excesses of the Metroid series doesn't seem to bode well for bosses to come!

Didn't finish the thing, but the boss of the next dungeon was more in line with zelda standards. Not quite 3 hits and he's done, but not nearly as silly as the first.

Just wait until the final boss. I thought they were all fairly benign, but especially compared to that one.

I can't even imagine how hard it is for a new player to get into the competitive 1v1. It's probably frustrating because most people who still play this game have 1000+ hours in it. I doubt match making helps.

Anyway, here is a replay of a recent game I won, just wanted to throw it out in case someone interested. I rarely win against Chaos so it felt good. I had three looted Tanks by the end and his two Plague Marines only managed to kill one.

    Here it is

I love DoW2 1v1, only game that makes me actually sweat, swear and feel anything( ie, satisfied but only when I win).
I'll try to find time to watch that. I loves me some good Looted Tank play. Great unit. I do miss having the time to play multiplayer stuff. If I did I suspect I would still be banging my head of DoW2. It's such a well designed game, and winning always feels amazing.

I've been passing the time waiting for XCOM to unlock by playing some FTL, mostly. I was lucky enough to beat the boss on my third or fourth attempt on Easy, and went straight to Normal, which has been giving me a pretty hard time overall. I keep learning, though.

I've also been playing some X-COM, just to get me in the mood for shooting aliens.

I got to play Sanctum for the first time today. I've had it for well over a year, but I could never get a co-op game going so I never bothered.

Made the mistake of playing survival. We started on Normal, got owned and decided to kick it down to Easy for the next attempt... We made it until Round 60 before our boredom won out and we quit. The enemies turned into ridiculous bullet sponges, and we had long since upgraded all of our turrets rendering continued play incredibly repetitive. We played the simplest map (forget the name, the big open square) so it was pretty easy to optimize our maze and defenses... Even still, the friendly-fire metagame of pushing each other into the Slow Fields/incoming waves and the excellent rocket jump provide a lot more fun than a traditional tower defense. I look forward to trying the other levels on the proper mode.

I'm playing "I'm waiting those tense moments for XCOM to unlock for me!"

...oh, and by the way, I finally signed up for forum membership just to say "I love reading RPS!"

Thank you for all the XCOM coverage. Despite all the things it isn't (or that it "doesn't have"), this IS a game I'm looking forward to. This is a game that the coverage, and the demo has touched all the right points for me (Seriously, did anyone else play the same terrible, and I mean TERRIBLE X-Com demo my friends and I played?).

And before you start carving my "political alliances" in stone, if this new XCOM isn't for you, then it isn't for you. That's fine. I'm fine with playing it shortly.

Meanwhile, I think I'm gonna try something I haven't done since DA1 -- Tweeting my thoughts/reactions/horrifying misforturnes as I go through a new game. I think XCOM fits the bill. If you want to help by encouraging me not to hit the LOAD GAME button (which I used to do all the time), I'm @GettingMauled

    Cheers!

That boss is one of the worst in the game. The boss of the fourth dungeon is pretty awful too because of teleport spam, but I don't think it's anywhere near as much of a damage sponge. The others aren't nearly so bad. They're mostly a case of figure out how to hurt them, repeat 2-3 more times, cue cutscene.

Battlefield 3, the singleplayer is terrible, the multiplayer (while rather good) is unplayable due to a punkbuster bug kicking everyone out after a few minutes for "FUTZING" a file that didn't exist. Glad I own it, as I genuinely am a fan of the craft in the multiplayer, but GOOD GOD why don't they make the game F2P and own up to their business model.

Dishonored! Had to use Spotflux to unlock it, but, AFAIK, Steam doesn't care about it as long as you don't use it to buy. I'm loving the game, it's the game of my dreams, so far.

    @GB Crush: Welcome! ^^

Got the Patterns beta last night. It's charming, somehow, even if I'm not too fond of the camera. I keep wishing for a first person camera, but it probably wouldn't work very well considering the shapes you can build with. Building just feels a bit 'remote' compared to Minecraft, but maybe I'll stop comparing it to Minecraft when I've played it some more.

The physics will probably be one of the main things that will make it interesting; I was pleasantly surprised when the stairs I had built to get out of a hollow pyramid fell over because they were unbalanced. So far I don't have a clue about the different materials, but it seems like some of them are probably heavier than others and there should be some rubber-ish type of material too, but I haven't found it yet.

It seems promising, but it would probably be more correct to call it an alpha rather than a beta considering all the things they are planning to add (it runs well on my laptop and I haven't encountered any bugs so far, so it feels mature in that respect, though).

Yep, I played like three games in total after buying it because I couldn't get in to a single game because of that.

I just gave Retro City Rampage a go, so far it is barely a game, but more of a non-stop 80s and current pop culture reference fest. I pre-ordered because I'm a sucker for exactly that, and loved the first two GTAs (actually I loved all of them, just wanted to blurt out that i know where they come from, sorry). I don't know if the game has functional mechanics beyond the first half hour, but it still seems to be a nice ride, complete with several visual styles of consoles from the first few decades of video gaming.

Other than that, i still play FTL...

Started experiencing that bug too yesterday. Hopefully they'll fix it soon. And what does f2p have to do with anything?
