Okay, man. But the problem I have with him is that he's practically a smarter Andrew Ryan and twice the asshole he is. Charismatic, yes but also a selfish megalomaniac. He just wants to put things into his own little bottle with little or no concern about the others around him, especially when he had established New Vegas as another police state. So, to me, it's not an ideal scenario for New Vegas , having this kind of guy running the place.

House loves to talk about his grand visions of humanity, but he seems to care very little for the humans themselves. He dreams of spaceships and offworld colonies while the people outside his compound are starving. And he has no problems wiping out everyone who's unwilling to go along with his plans.

That said, I still joined him on my first playthrough. Working for House is the most sensible path for a Courier who's in it purely for selfish reasons, because unlike with the NCR and the Legion he compensates you well for your assistance. Plus, I could listen to Wayne Newton drone on about crushing the underclasses for hours.

I'm personally ideologically opposed to House's ideals in my own life of course.

But the point is that you're potentially being tested to make the big call on the basis of what will work in your given context, not what feels right. You don't have to do whats right for the majority or even the future, but whichever choice you make plenty of people will suffer. House's ego and pride is unquestionably a greater motivation for him over the well being of humanity, but the two are nonetheless aligned, to the point where he pursues it with vigour and single-mindedness. He saved NV in the first place. He also can be demonstrably relied on to be around to enact that and keep it together with willpower, basically to do what he says on the basis of his legacy thus far. pretty much every plan hes made has happened, he gets shit done as well as talking at length a out it. Unlike the other two options where the rule of their government is tied to nepotism and conventional life cycles and ideology and practice are pretty disparate or exceedingly unlikely to align.
House's option is also tied to greater political stability in the round, being the form on offer which is most amenable to other political powers existing so long as they don't meddle. I guess you could so hope as Vegas flourishes the Mojave will benefit in time from being aligned to it.

Of course, House only works if you believe that the objective preservation and progress of humanity is a better option than making a stand for an ideal and the power of that, which is I think an equally viable consideration, just not one im roleplaying at present.
Choosing House is to gamble for the biggest stakes i think, in that you're hoping the preservation of Vegas can somehow equate to the salvation of a species. I would argue the worst overall choice is actually NCR if you have an issue with the status qou. Likewise the independent option, unless you have a very high opinion of yourself. But I do like the sort of high noon shoot out element of it, everyone for themselves.

Finally, he's the best sort of Randyan Howard Hughes captain of industry type character I think I've ever encountered in pretty much any medium. He's superbly conceived and portrayed. Not that you can know this when role playing your choice but killing him and talking to him at first reveals a genuine concern for humanity I would say. Also, a very tragic moment, that reveal, when you get to see the form of humanity he knows.

Except for all his blather about humanity, he doesn't want to save humanity. He doesn't give two shits about humanity. He doesn't even give two shits about things going on outside his walled fortress. His lot is a net drain on humanity, all in service to continuing his enterprise: He doesn't have citizens, he has employees. He can't exist without a larger body to leech, as his enterprise is a casino enterprise. It's the NCR that brought farming to the region and feeds everybody; House just solidified his position with robot jackboots.

It doesn't matter if he does or doesn't, so long as it happens. There's more reason to assume-for whatever reason-that humanity's capability for progress will be furthered under House ultimatley. Like I stated earlier gambling on deciding the fate of the Mojave and the fate of humanity are quite different objectives though.

Killing brain cells by alternating the new God of War on the PS3 and Saints Row 3 on the PC.

Grabbed the season pass when it was free from THQ (pre-order deal, if memory serves) but never got around to playing through them, so I went back to the char I restarted a few months back. Of course, I restarted that char to do all the assassinations and vehicle thefts before endgame, so I could be a while :p.

As for God of War: Ascension. When it is fun, I love it. But mostly, I am just finding myself annoyed by puzzles and thinking the devs screwed up combat. To me, God of War was always the kind of spectacle fighter where you just spam combos of square and triangle to kill the crap out of stuff. The strategy was in positioning yourself and managing the mobs. Ascensions feels like a middle ground in that it is trying to tap into the Devil May Cry "You need to actually learn the combos and timing" while still sticking to the hordes and zoomed out camera. End result is I find myself getting repeatedly sodomized because I can't tell which blob is Kratos or by the enemies who all seem to get timed immunity.
But when it is fun, holy crap it is fun.

For gods' sake, the game asks me whether I want to hand over the care of a magical child prodigy with unpredictable powers beyond our comprehension to either a powerful sorceress, or an army nurse, and then the only consequence of this choice is that the lady in question will act like the two of you decided to adopt a puppy or something. It's completely incongruous.

Leveldesign and the physics are perfect in this game. Didnt mind the backtracking you have to do in some levels.
Cave Story is a massively fun game with a great soundtrack. However, some of the bosses can get a bit frustrating and take a bit of practice to defeat. I can only advise that you load up on rockets and learn to dodge with the machine gun. I forget which boss is the Evil Core though, is that the one half way through or at the end of the game?

If it is the end of the game the only possible way I was able to beat that after many attempts (spoilers but I think this is important to know or you won't be able to do it without loads of skill):

The last part is three bosses in a row with no saving in between. You need an item called "heart in a jar" or something, whatever it is called it refills all your health in one use. I can't remember where you get this item but it is near the start. I hope you haven't used it already!

Defeat the first two bosses (should be easy enough with practice) and then use your heart jar to refill the rest of your health and go and fight the final boss. I was dying over and over for hours on end until I remembered about that item and defeated the final boss in one go.

Heavily playing Battlefield 3, latest DLC is enjoyable but perhaps lacking the final 'punch' I was expecting.

Replaying Bioshock 2, (harder than I remember) in preparation for an article to write.

Far Cry 3 (still) from from Xmas.

A few other things on the slow burner, but that's the main ones.

Might & Magic 8 is slowly coming to an end. I now see why it's probably the weakest of the M&M series, not counting the ninth and final game. It does feel much smaller than the similar previous two games but the gameplay is still mostly identical. However, the main problem is the absurd amount of enemies. It's difficult to describe but if you walk to a dungeon from a town and you fight on your way about ten times as many enemies as are in the dungeon itself, it quickly becomes not only ridiculous but also very tiresome. Doesn't help that AoE spells in this game are all either terrible, expensive or unreliable.
Now, towards the end, I decided to clean out the main dragon cave in Garrote Gorge and it looks this when I approach

and roughly fifty dragons later and I can actually enter the cave, only to be greeted by

Just about every dungeon is like this and it's really not that interesting. The pacing suffers severely from it. If I had to guess, I'd say that the purpose of this game was to generate some fast cash because of NWC/3DO's financial troubles at the time. It did not end well.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but there is also the 'no god, no master' option of taking out all 3 factions and not being the boss of NV. I went with that...

I started playing Victoria II and Imperalism II. Also I might fancy another game of Alpha Centauri with the Crossfire expansion, GoG updated their version with the addon in December.

The text on blocking isn't very clear, as far as I recall you have to press the block button the moment the attack connects to counter. You can just hold the block button to block incoming attacks, but you can't counter while blocking continuously.

As far as I remember to block incoming attacks you just hold the button. Some attacks from some enemies can't be blocked. To counter you have to press the block button at the right time, which I've found it just after the swing starts.

It's possible that on Apocalypse difficulty that you can't just block attacks. Personally I found dashing around and dodging from the attacks is a better idea than trying to block or counter. Dodge out and then use the spear charge ability to get back in once they've finished their attack.
