I think you're reaching with Far Cry 2, but I'm more than willing to entertain your points regardless and hopefully learn something from them because there's plainly something more to that game even if you and I would strongly disagree over what works and what doesn't. But Infinite, Jesus, no. It's a failure. It has no more depth than PS2-era JRPGs that think the mere mention of racism equals a searching debate on the subject, and no more characterisation than Liara in the original Mass Effect (hint: there is nothing more to Liara in ME1 than "Oh, Shepard! What is this thing you humans call... love?" and "Mother!"). Infinite has less depth to its combat than Doom. The world falls apart if you apply the slightest pressure: it's a profoundly lazy, slapdash piece of design (for crying out loud, Bioshock's gimmick only worked on the first playthrough, and Levine wants it to drive another game?).

    God, I hate it. It just represents so many things I detest about current approaches to game design, and the things people seem to want to read into them. Bioshock 2 still had its flaws - it was a cash grab, it was built on top of a flawed and dated game - but it still eclipsed the first game, and it damn well obliterates Infinite. I started it back up again a while ago and while problems with the new DRM stopped me from getting too far, the first proper fight against a Big Sister (on Hard, with no bio-chambers) was more thrilling than anything in Infinite. And the story, jeez. Still one of the few game endings to make me openly cry - for starters, for how it says more in five minutes than Hideo Kojima's said in his entire god damned career.

    Not buying Burial at Sea, and I'm not buying anything of Levine's until it goes on sale. I gave him a chance and he blew it. Not that it matters to him or anyone else in the slightest - just saying that I'm pretty sure this is one of the few times when I say I hate it and I almost, almost mean that word.

    I got about halfway through Infinite and just...gave up. If Elizabeth asks me to catch another coin, I'm going to go insane. Get her out of the city? I'd shoot HER if I could, and then make a dash to escape myself. But of course, I can't. Slave to the game's lackluster narrative and all that.

    Which should in no way be confused with the game's narrative. That and the game play have nothing - and I mean zero - to do with one another. The former involves watching cutscenes and dialogue in which you play no part; the latter involves shooting a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with, and no effect on, the former. "Disjointed" doesn't even begin to sum it up.

    I would have loved to explore Columbia. To know how its citizens obtain their food and water. How they make essentials like bread, clothing, footwear, etc. To understand how the city sustains itself and how I could affect the existence of this city in the sky.

    But I couldn't do any of those things. Its not a world. Its a stage, and an unconvincing one at that.

    On a more cheerful note, playing Beast Boxing. Extremely fun. Reminds me of the old Punch Out days, except vastly improved. The customization allows players to develop their own play styles, at least to some extent, and opponents can switch up their own tactics on the fly.

    Its a small game, but good fun.

    Doing races in Path of Exile for the first time, the new Descent Champions one. Lots of fun, even though RNG hasn't been kind to me, as usual. My poor backlog is suffering horribly, though :( can't stop playing it!

    playing sin.... why does those 90s fps have to have stupid platform segments.... slow down the action makes you stare like an idiot at the floor....


    speaking about backlogs... Sin and Sin Episode 1 are my second purchase on steam. i put barely and hour and half in sin 1 and none in episode 1.

    Just started fooling around with the darkmod and it is amazing. If for some reason you haven't tried it, go ahead. It feels like Thief 3.5 (minus some crappy voice acting).

    Just got Assassin's Creed 4. Doesn't feel like an AC game at all, really. In a good way. I mean, there's an AC narrative, of sorts. Templars want something to gain more power; Assassins trying to stop them. Blah blah blah. And its worth sticking strictly to the narrative, until its not anymore.

    Stay with the main narrative long enough to get your ship. Its worth it. Don't even bother with side missions or exploring Havana until you unlock your own ship. You can always explore later. Getting the ship really opens things up. To be perfectly honest, I don't know whether I'll finish the game or not; unless I have to progress the narrative to unlock more of the map - and I am certain I will need to do so - I will likely just play this game for the open world pirate simulator it really wants to be. That's what I came for, and it certainly does not disappoint.

    Finally back and able to use my launch date delivery PS4.

    Killzone ShadowFall: Fun game, and a further reminder that the devs (Guerilla Games (?)) would probably tickle any 90s/early 00s PC gamer's fancy. The campaign has just the right balance of set pieces and gameplay, the maps tend to have a few variations on the corridors (vents, other rooms, etc), the guns are solid and fun, and you feel like you are part of an elite squad (when they want you to be in one) without feeling like said squad are doing all the work. I loved it

    And to make it count for the thread :P
    AssFlag: Within five minutes, I found myself liking !(Henry Rollins) much more than I could ever tolerate Cardboard Connor. And I think Ubi have been playing WAY too much Uncharted (or watching Nathan Fillion's take on Harrison Ford) as this definitely feels like a modern Indy-esque character.


    Also, Warframe and Blacklight both translate well to console land.

    Is the PC UI of AssFlag (love the acronym) any good? I stopped playing Ass3 pretty much because of the asdf user interface.

    I'm marching towards failure in EUIV as Prussia, Ironman mode of course. The new colonial expansion sounds promising. But as always with big, future annoucements, all incentive is lost to play the game until said expansion/patch/DLC is released. So I'm grappling with mainly non-colonial powers for the moment.

    Its sad how many games make failure a punishment instead of a glorious blaze of glory that so many strategy games manage. Its a hallmark of the genre that really doesn't get enough praise.

    Tearaway on my Vita. It's such a great game. It does everything right.

    I finished Dust: An Elysian Tale and while it was an enjoyable game it dropped the ball towards the end. In the last zone of the game you fight against solider enemies who will parry your attacks unless you wait for them to attack so you can parry them. One or two of these guys is manageable. Five isn't really. Not making matters easier is that you have a horde of friendly npcs running around with you for the first time in the entire game who don't all attack, but rather move back and forth trying to look busy.

    Then, you fight the same boss four times in a row. I've beaten him already. Get bent making me fight him again. And again. And again.

    Tried to finish Brutal Legend, but couldn't win the penultimate stage battle. I ended up watching the final cutscenes on Youtube to get some sort of closure to the story. As a passionate lover of metal music, I enjoyed the game very much (especially the cameos by famous musicians and the soundtrack), but as a gamer, I couldn't help but be a little disappointed. The crappy controls and rather boring RTS gameplay made the experience not as good as it could have been. If it had been an action game all the way through I would've enjoyed it more.

    Played a good LAN session of Minecraft with four friends last night. A lot of fun was had by all. We ended up building houses around a large lake in a valley in the mountains and connecting the houses by a large railroad. We also explored the largest cave system I've ever seen, which contained an underground ravine that must've been at least 80 blocks high. Amazing game.

    Started a second round of X-com:EW, also on normal (don't want to commit to classic and finding normal to be challenging enough to be fun) and this time I went for Mecs and not gene modification.

    Also playing Gunslinger and although it's gorgeous and fun, I think I'm too tired of FPS at the moment to fully enjoy it.

    POE: I am nearing thje end of my first playtrough. Still have to go trought the last dungeon. I am getting bored of my character already.

    Completed Hotline Miami on the vita and then beat the specia Rezzed level. That was a fun addition. I was ohoping for nice twist in the script but it didn't deliver on that end.

    Gonna complete Dust: an Elysian tail next.

    Just bought Kingdom of Amalur complete for 9$, that's a mistake because I know I 'll get bored by it even before starting it. oh well !

    I also finaly made a "Trash can" in my backlog.Games i know I'll never complete. Strangely it hurts me, it makes me feel like I am a lesser gamer for not completing them. It's silly I know, but that's how I feel about it...

    It is silly. Personally, I think the concept of backlog is kinda silly. Gaming creates a sort of hyper-consumerist pressure where you have to play and beat everything, and then bundles provide you with so many games that that becomes impossible. Then gaming feels like a chore because you feel guilty for buying something that you won't use, etc.

    But, the purpose of playing games is to have fun. If you don't enjoy something, don't do it. And also don't forget that as long as you enjoyed one of the games in a bundle, you haven't wasted anything. And sometimes you buy something and don't like it even though everyone else does; that's just a fact of life, you took an informed risk and lost. There's nothing you can do to change that, so don't feel bad about it.

    The only game I feel truly bad about buying was Winter Voices, which I bought because it looked like my kind of thing even though reviews said it was terrible. Then I played it, and it sucked. But I realized that the worst thing I could do in this situation is compound wasted money with wasted time. Now I check reviews more carefully.

    The opinion that I've heard more than once from different folks is that Normal is a bit too easy and Classic is a bit too hard. Classic certainly starts off very punishing in the first few game months, although it gets easier as you get good gear and experienced troops.

    I have rubbish tip for well, rubbish games that I know I shouldn’t go near again, games like A.R.E.S. which bored me to tears for an hour or so over the weekend. Do the levels get any more interesting? The controls get less awkward over time?

    Due to random illness I finally found an excuse to not socialise for a while and the time to complete 2 games: F.E.A.R. 2 was a brilliant shooter, with a B-movie plot that was pulled off brilliantly, I have to say I loved every minute of it!... until the end, where I felt violated and unrewarded. So much so that I delved straight in to F.E.A.R. 3 (F.3.A.R?) and discovered that I’d need a mate (and therefore to socialise) to play this updated ‘modern’ shooter with its fancy regenerative health mechanic.

    Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller also found closure. It was fun Overall, especially part 3, but I’m in no rush to go out and get more games by Phoenix. Part 4 just felt a bit ropey.

    So, whilst I waited another point and click to download, I played Trine 2, always brilliant. I’ve found a new love for monster levitation, low-gravity arrows and spike traps.

    Finally Darkeye: Chains of Satinav was ready and I dived into what seemed like a terribly voice acted knock off of Disneys ‘Sword in the Stone’.

    Switching that off, but not wanting to completely discount German game design principles by just one title I booted up Risen, which had been on my ‘to do’ list forever. 11 hours later… I think this one’s a keeper.

    The Binding of Isaac 22hrs (about four in the past few days) and I'm still no closer to beating Mom. I'm beginning to wish is heeded the advice not to install Wrath of the Lamb before getting better at the game. At least I'm fairly consistently getting to the fourth or fifth level before dying horribly and I've almost cleared the basement without taking a hit at least five or six times now.

    Also played a bit of DishonoUred. It's quite fun going non-lethal (as I always try to do in stealth games) I'm just struggling at the first assassination. Any tips?
