Cheeky DLC buy?

I am currently playing Fall of the Samurai and having a jolly good old time blasting Japan to pieces. However, the super effective artillery (possibly heath seeking at higher levels of experience) and the Mexican stand offs that are line battles with volley fire (devastating after 20 seconds) are starting to grate on me. I miss masses of infantry fighting it out while being occasionally menaced by arrows.

Therefore my evil plan goes as follows: Buy the Rise of the Samurai DLC without buying the original Shogun 2 base game = 30 euros saved. I have not been able to find anyone saying this won't work considering FotS includes the entire base game's engine and has space on the main menu for RotS.

Opinions?

Well seeing as Steam explicitly states "Requires the base game Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam in order to play." on the Rise of the Samurai DLC page, I'd say your idea is flawed.

Second, are you aware you can buy the base Shogun 2 for £5 on amazon then copy the serial into Steam?

It's a standalone expansion (expandalone)? If so it'll work just fine. Shogun 2 can be bought very cheaply however.

Rise and fall are not the same.

Rise is normal DLC, Fall is expandalone.

It's worth noting that the gunpowder-powered troops in the base game are not that devastating.

I wanted to prove you all wrong! Because of course I had noticed the Steam descriptions, I just thought I might be able to outsmart them anyways. Well, the loophole never excisted. I didn't get through payment because this error occured:

Oh well, I think FotS can keep me entertained until CA churn out Rome 2 or something in that order. People seem to think it is going to be Rome 2 anyways.

From your initial post it sounds like Shogun 2 (base game) would be right up your tree. £5 on Amazon. It really is a fantastic game, best battle AI of the total war series and a beautiful art style.

Would anyone who's played it say that the battle AI in FOTS suffers because of the greater emphasis on firearms? I really didn't like Empire or Napoleon anyway because of the emphasis on guns.

I quite liked Shogun 2 but I got to a point in my campaign where I was going to have to stab somebody in the back to expand and kinda never went back to it.

Does the multiplayer still have that terrible RPG element to it? I tried playing Shogun 2 multiplayer last year, but the game was already a few months old and everyone had upgraded troops that destroyed my stock troops. Apparently I had to let people beat me for a couple weeks to get enough XP to improve my army enough to play the game. I decided to just stick to single player, which is a shame.
