Got it... I think. Now I'm just looking for the DayZ Zombie RPG server. Is that what it's called?

Once you get into the multiplayer browser, you should see some tabs along the bottom. Go to "Filter" and under Host search for "dayz". You should see about 5 open servers with the region in the name. You probably want to join an EU server :)
You should check the mediafire page before you load the game every time, there are regular updates and normally you just need to download and replace the code files. The changelog tells you what files you need to dl in the event that something other than code has been patched.

No servers appear, I must have messed up somewhere. This is why I don't usually do mods. :(
Hmm, lets see.
You definitely have both ARMA 2 and ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead installed?
Are you using Steam or not?
Your dayz folder address should look something like this: C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\@dayz\Addons
Does that look correct?
Perhaps make sure you extracted all the necessary files from mediafire and put them in your @dayz\Addons folder?
Admittedly, if you don't usually do mods perhaps this wasn't the best place to start. Its not even remotely user friendly atm.
Or try using this launcher @Drake:

Play Arma2:CO with us. (It isn't nearly as difficult as you might think.)
It's okay to not like things.
Make sure you're using the Operation Arrowhead exe, also.
I did all of this. I'm using Steam, and I put the run parameters in Steam's dialog box for them. I'm running Arma 2 rather than Operation Arrowhead or Combined Ops. I can't see any servers when filtering for host "dayz". :( Any tips? I'm in Australia.
EDIT:Oh. Running as OA or Combined Ops? And is the semicolon in the run parameters important, or just a break?Make sure you're using the Operation Arrowhead exe, also.

I've never found a mod that was user friendly. The creators all seem to assume you know what they're talking about, and skip the most basic details.
I've got the Anniversary Edition box set. I downloaded the files from www.mediafire.com/dayz and created a folder in my ArmA II program files location at C:\Program Files (x86)\Bohemia Interative\ArmA 2 and called that folder @dayz
There was already a folder called Addons in C:\Program Files (x86)\Bohemia Interative\ArmA 2, but I rigidly continued following the instructions to the letter anyway. Next I unzipped the downloaded files into the @dayz\addons folder, and this is where I was unsure whether I was supposed to unzip everything so it looks like this - @dayz\addons\dayz or remove the second dayz folder and put the files directly into @dayz\addons
Bugger it, I covered all bases and did both of them. Finally I opened properties on the current ArmA shortcut on my desktop and added -nosplash - mod=@dayz into the section on the Shortcut tab which says 'target'. Next I loaded that shortcut and failing to find the DayZ servers, searched on the filter. Now I am proceeding to bash my skull against the desk repeatedly until an answer reveals itself.
That's even more complicated.
Not sure if I've done this. Gotta' figure out which is which, they all have multiple names. I think mine's called "combined operations"

So, this exists on one server? And when you play, can you run into other groups of humans?
And are the humans the real monsters??
Also, what's the user limit on an Arma server?
That mean's you don't have the mod launched properly.
What do you see when you click the expansions button in the Arma 2 main menu (right after you've launched the game)? If you've placed the @DayZ Folder in the Combined Operations Folder you should be able to activate it from that menu and it should stick. You sure you downloaded *all* the files?
This here works 100%:
0. Delete any old dayz stuff to be sure.
1. Download this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27432883/%40DayZ.7z
(it's the same stuff from the mediafire link, just prepacked properly)
2. Unzip it to your Combined Operations folder. (Amongst all the other folders you should now see a @DayZ Folder)
3. Launch Arma2 Combined Operations and click "Expansions".
4. You should see "DayZ" or similar. Activate it and restart the game. You should see "@DayZ" on the right side of the main menu.

The link isn't working, and I'm not sure I have a combined operations folder, it all seems to be jammed together. There's a Addon folder in main ArmA 2 directory, there's an Addons folder in the 'expansion' folder, there's an Addon folder in the 'PMC' folder, I'm swimming in Addon folders over here.
And there's no 'extensions' in the menu of the actual game, whatevever that is. Are you talking about 'expansions'? I see dayz there, and it's got a green square next to it. It also says 'dayz' in little font at the top right corner of the screen.

64, I think. Maybe higher, but you'd need a powerful server. There's currently 5 servers running the mod, with player limits between 27 and 50. They're all full right now. That's only the limit on simultaneous players though, I'm not sure there's any practical limit on how many different characters can exist.
And yes, the humans are the real monsters. Especially watch out for anyone with a military rank in their name, they will probably shoot you and take your baked beans.
So exciting. Can players see each other on a minimap/hud somehow, or is it possible to hide in the attic when the cruel beansnatchers arrive?
The link was still synching, it works now. And yes expansions, my bad.
According to that it should be working. The other reason you can't join may be because Combined Ops isn't initialized properly (that is, both Arma2 and Arma2: Operation Arrowhead running together). Can you click on Editor->New and list the available maps?
Arma2 reads stuff from all the addon-folders, the reason you use the modfolders (folders with @ at the beginning) is because you don't want to launch e.g. DayZ everytime (which would happen if you put all files in the addons folder in the root).

Nah, we've had joint events with 70+ and Shacktakck pulls in about 90 every week I think. There used to be a 200 player public server called Berzerk or something too. The hard limit is 386 or something ridiculous, and the devs often joke about removing it altogether (although the 144x12 unit cap would still apply I bet).

Ok, got it working in Steam. Chuck @dayz in Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead AS WELL AS in D:\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2, just to be sure . Put the run arguments in Operation Arrowhead's Steam right-click options, and to play, run Combined Operations via the Operation Arrowhead Steam icon (easiest way is to right click -> combined operations).
EDIT: By the way, it's incredible. Absolutely incredible.
"Can players see each other on a minimap/hud somehow" - nope. You don't get a mini- or mega-map, unless you find a GPS.

Ignore the version number, was a reminder for myself.
I'm a bit at a loss as it seems that you're launching Combined Operations and DayZ properly. Tried connecting again? The method described by me is how I did it and it works perfectly fine (with the Steam version though)
