    Hello,

The server seems to be down D-:

Was thinking about picking this up if it goes on sale this summer and saw that I already own it. Thats the problem with compulsive buys during various sales, I need to stop reading the bargain thread. I played alot of 1942 and BF2, but I've never played BC2, how similar are they(in terms of gameplay).

Better in some areas, worse in others. Infantry play is a hell of a lot better. It feels and works more satisfying, backed up by the phenomenal sound design which has deservedly won awards. A lot of things are breakable in some ways - you can chip walls, take down sentry towers, blow open walls and knock down buildings, where debris remains to hide in. You're not safe if you hide behind a wall in BC2. In some respect, it can kinda ruin other shooters for you, when in BC2 a grenade launcher will blow open a wall and possibly taken down an enemy behind it, whilst in others all that happens is the wall goes black for a few seconds and that person snipes you dead.

Map design is acceptable, but not fantastic. There are a few maps that are really good, but the BC series is more infantry-focused, being the off-shoot that it is. Maps are smaller, many rather linear, in that there are few or predictable flanking routes. Of course this gets balanced slightly by destructible buildings offering improvised routes for infantry (or tanks). There are significantly less vehicles to choose from, though they are very powerful in the right hands, so no difference there.

There are only 4 kits and unlike 2142 where kits allowed you to chop and change a few things giving more options and game-play routes, that is considerably reduced here. Really, what you see is what you get. Assault does all-rounder play and gives out ammo. Engineer repairs vehicles and is anti-vehicle. Recon is your sniper and medic is...well, the medic. That being said, there is some variety. All kits get kit-specific weapons which have different characteristics; range, damage, rate of fire and so on. Hence, one assault may not be the same as another; I could be carrying the close quarters rifle F2000 with a grenade launcher attachment, whilst someone else in my squad of 4 will be using the long range M16 with shotgun attachment. In addition, as you rank up you gain access to all kit weapons, namely pistols, shotguns and a couple of battle rifles.

Players get specialisations (read: perks) that can do different things, such as increase weapon damage (unfortunately this is very powerful, but it won't be in BF3), put an ACOG 4x scope on the weapon, give the player increased run speed etc. You have two of these and an additional one with a vehicle spec, such as an optical zoom, alternative main weapon fire and smoke launchers. A tight squad who work together in great balance can, like in BF2, really help a team.

BC2 has most of the things that make Battlefield Battlefield, but not all of them. Some of the things it adds are not fantastic, but others are better than what's been done before. You will be disappointed by the maps, although they are almost all serviceable and there are a few stand-out ones, but if you liked 1942/2, there's a very good chance that you'll sink your teeth into BC2. And if not, BF3 is round the corner!

Just picked this up in the Steam sale, is the RPS server no-more? I can't seem to find it in the server browser.

Yes, I cannot find it either. Also, I miss Quinns.

The last time I found the server, it was empty (at UK primetime, too!).

Shouldn't we make a RPS BC2 Steam group, or is there one already??

I really want to find a good server for this game (just picked it up on the Steam sale). Anyone still playing?

I'm playing, mostly the Vietnam add on at the moment which I actually think I'm preferring. But that may be as it runs so much smoother for me. I'm CuriousOrange on Steam and in England. BC2 Steam group sounds good.

I also just picked this game up in the Steam sale, and would relish the opportunity to play with some RPSers.

If there's no longer an official RPS server, perhaps we could somehow co-ordinate to meet on a certain server at a certain time, wearing a red carnation

Sounds like a good idea Corbain - does anyone have a nice UK server in their favourites they can suggest?

Seems that there are a bunch of new players thanks to the summer sales. I agree, if the server is down, we should at least try to form an RPS squad or two on some server. A UK server sounds good to me. Also, better get voice comms too, since there's going to be a bunch of players below the magnum ammo ranks :).

Hi, I'm sort of new here. I'm thinking I really should stop playing Brink and toying with stuff like the Homefront demo and play something good. Such as BFBC2 and not Brink. I really feel the likes of RPS have let me down by not pointing out that Brink will be like ETQW and be OK but get boring quickly and only have very few populated servers, as in they should have been saying most people will find it rubbish and unsatisfying and BTW don't waste your cash. Also the new free TF2 has proved to be less fun than I remember when TF2 was still vaguely new, so, hmm, RPS you let me down there too. Where were these fun TF2 servers at? Anyway, I actually really like the RPS site and I plan to be searching for the RPS BFBC2 server at the weekend. :)

Well we need a group name, an abbrevation, and a link. So I think let's come up with something and create a group. Should it be a BC2 group or a general BF group?

Server is back up. Feel free to practice for when we set up an RPS BF3 clan.

Why is it on Team Deathmatch though?
