Okay, this thread is making me feel very grey and crumbly now. I think I'm the only one who played an FPS pre-Wolf3D. I'm still in my 20s, dammit! I'm not old! I'M NOT OOOOLD!

Problem is it's a bit more complicated than either of those options. Most things are. I don't think one is likely to approach a satisfactory account of what Bioshock was and wasn't and what it did and didn't mean without a whole lot more words than anyone is about to offer up in a forum post. I mean, sure, you can say that it was SS2 but dumber and that's a perfectly valid observation, but it doesn't remotely approach the whole story. I think that in most respects BS2 is a much better game than BS1, but that doesn't mean that I think it's more deserving of a place in Ye Grand Hall of Video Game Fame.

1. Wolfenstein 3D
2. AvP, Rainbow Six, Deux Ex, NOLF, Thief, Stalker, Fear, Metro 2033 all played
3. Not completed but I played it to the point where most people stopped, you know what I'm talking about
4. PC only
5. Stalker, Fallout: New Vegas, Joyce
6. Yes, grand strategy
Bioshock was most certainly not one of the best games of all time, though I enjoyed it
The Medallion of the Imperial Psychopath, a Napoleon: Total War AAR
For the Emperor!, a Total War: Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai AAR
1. First FPS
Perfect Dark N64
2. Which have I played
I've played Quake, Unreal, Rainbow Six, STALKER, Fear, and Metro... So about half?
3. Have I played System Shock?
No, I didn't play it when it was out and I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy.
4.
I play FPS exclusively on PC
5.
Morrowind
Morrowind
Love them both too much
New Vegas by a longshot
6.
I am very fond of flight sims and I enjoy grand strategies but I am not very good at them. I don't know what other games are 'difficult' genres but I do play a lot of RTS as well.
I also enjoyed Bioshock very much.

1. Doom
2. All except OpFlash
3. Yessiree
4. What are these "the console" you speak of?
5. Pick one of each if you've played both:
Oblivion.
Skyrim.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Fallout 3
Joyce.
6. Fat strategy yes, flight sims no, difficulty is never off-putting for me even when I'm totally crap at it.
Comment:
Bioshock is a weird one. I played through 1 and 2 in a week during my holidays. I found the shooting to be dreadful, the enemy types far too few, the difficulty/vita chamber thing rubbish (BDs were just hit point buckets and just needed respawns).
Even though usually in games I do use a lot of useless things and toys just for enjoyment, in both Bioshocks I found most of the toys useless and didn't bother using any of them. I just went with fire/ice and a couple of guns.
In spite of all this, when I turned it onto "Easy" (I've never gone below "Normal" in an FPS before) and just ploughed through everyone, I really enjoyed it. The combat no longer bothered me and I just enjoyed the ride. I could probably have got the same enjoyment from watching someone else play it.
I guess it was the fun setting and story that I played it for.
Oh and for that bloke wot said he hasn't played Metro yet, spend the money now! I loved the pants off it.
1. Wolfenstein 3D, I think... Or possibly Doom.
2. Yes, Quake, Unreal, Alien versus Predator, Rainbow Six, Deus Ex, Thief, STALKER, FEAR and Metro 2033.
3. No.
4. PC.
5.
-
Skyrim (not played enough Morrowind to be certain at all about this one).
STALKER.
Fallout: New Vegas.
-
6. Not regularly.
You're welcome.
To be fair, I was thinking of saying the first FPS I played was Operation Wolf. I mean, it was a shooter and it did have a first-person perspective. But it was a side-autoscrolling 2D shooting gallery, so I don't think it fits the genre.
I did play Catacomb Abyss, but I know that was only after I played Wolf3D.

1. What was your first FPS game?
Don't remember for sure, but Nemac IV, Alien Breed 3D and Castle Master are certainly among them. Didn't own a PC yet when Doom and Duke 3D were around for the first time.
2. Have you played most of the following?
Quake - yes
Unreal - yes
Alien versus Predator - yes
Operation Flashpoint - no
Rainbow Six - no
Deus Ex - yes (though only a little bit - didn't click with me)
No One Lives Forever - no
Thief - no
S.T.A.L.K.E.R - no
FEAR - no
The Void - no
Metro 2033 - no
3. Have you played (= completed at least once) System Shock 2?
Played and enjoyed, yes - completed, no
4. Do you play the majority of your FPS games on a PC or consoles?
PC
5. Pick one of each if you've played both:
-
6. Do you play any "difficult genres" like grand strategies or flight sims?
Is Civ "grand strategy"? If so, yes.
1. Wolfenstein 3D
2. Answers:
Quake - yes
Unreal - yes
Alien versus Predator - yes
Operation Flashpoint - a little
Rainbow Six - a little
Deus Ex - yes, twice thru
Thief - yes
S.T.A.L.K.E.R - yes, completed
FEAR - year, completed
The Void - tried
Metro 2033 - yes, almost finished
3. Yes, completed it
4. Morrowind or Oblivion - hard! I'd opt for Oblivion, though prefer setting/mystery of Morrowind
Morrowind or Skyrim. - really enjoyed Skyrim but would lean to Morrowind here
Half Life 2 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R Hmmm. Would have to say Stalker
Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas. - Haven't played enough of latter to give choice here
Dostoyevsky or Joyce - Has to be Joyce since I'm from Dublin
6. I'll play anything good though do lean towards FPS and RPGs mostly.
P.
Full Disclosure -
I almost enjoyed Bioshock, it felt ropey and empty, it was an interesting story/setting but it always stuck in my craw that it felt like a thoughtless port. I skipped Bioshock 2 but I'm keeping my ear to the ground for Infinity & Beyond as I want it to be awesome. There were some nice ideas in there (Bioshock) but I don't recall ever being impressed by much of anything.
1. Doom most probably
2. Yes although R6 always bored me to tears.
3. Of course
4. PC
5. Pick one of each if you've played both:
Morrowind
Skyrim
HL2
F3
Your foreign composers mean nothing to me
6. Peggle?
Doom was the first I played, but Duke3D was the first I really enjoyed1. What was your first FPS game?
Haven't played AvP or Rainbow Six and I've never even heard of the void. But I've played the rest2. Have you played most of the following: Quake, Unreal, Alien versus Predator, Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six, Deus Ex, No One Lives Forever, Thief, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, FEAR, The Void, Metro 2033?
Nope.3. Have you played (= completed at least once) System Shock 2?
PC4. Do you play the majority of your FPS games on a PC or consoles?
5. Pick one of each if you've played both:
Morrowind or Oblivion.
Morrowind
Morrowind or Skyrim.
Skyrim
Half Life 2 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Tough. Honestly? HL2. Those buggy bits are so atmospheric
Haven't played new Vegas but I heard it sucks. Played through Fallout 3 but didn't love it.Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas.
I did start reading Ulysses once, but I found I was just waiting for something to happen most of the book. Gave up less than half way throughDostoyevsky or Joyce.
Used to play flight sims but haven't for some time now.6. Do you play any "difficult genres" like grand strategies or flight sims?
EDIT: Also strategies! Just remembered Civ 2, Warcraft and Sim City are strategies. doh!
Last edited by roryok; 17-05-2012 at 01:18 PM. Reason: forgot strategies
Note: I consider Bioshock to be an excellent game, but I rarely use the qualifier, "one of the best games ever." I think it is, but how many are "one" of the best?
1. Wolfenstein 3D
2. Have played all of those besides Operation Flashpoint and The Void.
3. Yes
4. PC only for FPS
5. Morrowind is my favorite Elder Scrolls. HL2 and Stalker are both fun in different ways, but I guess Stalker gets more hours of play. Fallout New Vegas is way better than FO3. Still trying to get through Ulysses, so I'll say Dostoevsky for now.
6. Don't play flight sims, but I love Paradox grand strategies and Civ games.
1. Wolfenstein 3d
2. All with the exception of the Void.
3. Multiple times. This was a first day purchase for me back when it came out.
4. PC.
5. Morrowind
Skyrim
Half Life 2
Fallout: New Vegas.
I've ever read Joyce, thus Dostoyevsky gets selected by default!
6. I haven't played a proper flight sim in ages, but I am quite addicted to Paradox's grand-strategy games. Crusader Kings II is one of my most played games of the year so far.
