DayZ Useful Information + Links
This thread is for useful information for all players and links.
Presently, this is mainly a list of useful links.
Getting things running:
Main mod page: http://dayzmod.com/
Installation Guide: http://www.dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=2085
Optional but recommended extras:
Guide to getting Mumble voicechat working so you can work with RPS buddies: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/foru...nd-other-games
(A good push to talk button for Arma is 'tab', but remember that Arma's freelook key is alt, so you might prefer to use ` or ~, basically the key under escape.)
Guide to running the ARMA 2 Beta patch w/ DayZ on steam: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...35&postcount=3
(Beta patch is optional, and is backwards compatible. Is said to improve some netcode, but I haven't noticed any difference beyond being able to join servers using the beta patch. Details on getting the beta patch are in the install guide above.)
Ingame information, maps, etc.
Map of choice for navigating around Chernaus: http://avidblur.com/arma2/
Great loot map with similar functionality, but less good for navigating: http://www.teamfackin.com/moocow/dayz/map/ (loot map may or may not be outdated with new patches.)

Getting the Beta Patch running with Day Z.
Step one: Install the Arma 2 Beta Patch.
Get the link with the GREEN BACKGROUND. It looks like a page header, it's actually the latest build. Download it, run the .exe
Step two: Edit a launch command file.
Problematically, for steam users, this seems to make the steam overlay go away. There may be a way around this, but we do not know it.
What you do is you go into the root directory for Arma Operation Arrowhead, usually in program files / steam / steamapps / common / Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead, or wherever else you've installed it. You should see a .cmd file named something like _runACO2_beta.cmd. Make a copy of this file, rename it _runACO2_beta_dayz.cmd or whatever suits you, then right click it, edit it, and either edit it as per this guide: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...35&postcount=3 or copy paste the entirety of: http://pastebin.com/SU3DHpqZ into the .cmd file. Then save it.
Step three: Actually running the game.
Then, make a shortcut to the .cmd file on your desktop or wherever you want, and double click it. It iwll launch Arma 2 for you, with the beta patch, and DayZ. We hope. The .cmd works like a .exe.
Hope that works!

Great list Jim, thanks; wasn't aware of the loot map nor the wiki, will help out a bunch. I'd like to tack on two things, if I may:
If you're just starting, please don't hesitate to join Mumble with us. The regular crew is quite friendly and happy to help you get started, helping with whatever question you have. Just ask which server we're playing on at the given moment and hop in to join us.
Second, and this is a bit of shameless self-promotion, you can usually tune in to my live-stream to see what we're currently up to/getting killed by.
Updated with a little thing on getting the beta patch running with Day Z, as best we know how. Method has worked for steam users and at least one person who bought the game from Amazon.
I've created an auto-run script (such as what is often found in MMO's); you can find it on my download page. It's tested and working in ArmA II.
Please let me know if you have any trouble/suggestions/requests for it.

Reason: Cut down on revisions, added central location for the download.
Thanks for this Barrow it's been really useful :)
Ah, thanks for that script, Barrow. You've saved my middle finger untold amounts of trauma.
Are there any newbie guides you'd recommend, preferably with info for those who've not even played Arma before? I've got a lot of very stupid questions that the guides I've read so far haven't given any indication of. For example, I've been running around for a couple of hours now, and have yet to figure out how to open doors.
Not all doors open, if you walk up to one and face it, you will get what looks like two arrows with a line down the middle you then use your scroll wheel to select open or close door.
Scroll wheel on your mouse is pretty much for everything.
The day z wiki has a lot of info.
That's the understatement of the year...
