Sorry, I should clarify there. I don't mean a step backwards from the 360 which is just plain shit and designed for marketing not usage, I mean from 2012 in general, y'know?
Yes, it's clean and clear and I always know where my games are (who'da thought you couldn't take *that* for granted on a games console? Fuck me, MS) but it's still got shades of noddy and always feels like there's barely a layer between you and the machine.
But I'll still take Sony's seeming inability to host latest versions of files and noddy UI over the toss that's been thrown at us since NXE and on.
There's no manifesto. There's no formal plan.

I like how Sony's dashboard thingy looks, but I really do not like the fact there's no cross game chat. My biggest problem with it. That said I don't like how the NXE is just designed for Kinect users.
I tend to think it being for Kinect is the least of its problems. It's designed, quite explicitly so, around what Microsoft wants you to use the console for at any given time not what you, the user actually want. It's the same kind of design that leads to Windows 8 and what they're doing with the Visual Studio update. It's not, any longer, about what you want to use the device or software for, it's what MS want you to use the device and software for and how they want you to use it.
You only have to have a read through their design musings on whatever respective blog they're dumping things (the ribbon post is a good place to start) to see how there's a genuine belief that they're doing the right thing even when it's things counter to what the user wants or needs (and munging stats and graphs as proof) and that's a corporate problem.
And it's going to get very interesting in the near future because MS policies have led to a lot of decamping to Steam and to a lesser extent PS3 before considering console dev. Which is amazing for us PC gamers but for the next generation of console gamers, enjoy your Activision and enjoy your EA games, just don't expect those other gems to come along any time soon.
It's all very silly.

Microsoft studies all their graphs the wrong way up. Except the ones regarding their coffers.
