Setting up a site - Domain naming

I already have a wordpress account and i "get it", but I have no experience about domain name services.

I've found one thats cheap called crazydomains co uk (not a link on purpose) and I know what I want for someone is available, but I'm finding it next to impossible to find testimonials or well written reviews.

Is there a domain naming service (not hosting, I intend to just point to a wordpress blog) that anyone recommends, or is generally a case that when you don't want hosting, or email that cheapest is best?

It doesn't particularly matter what registrar you go with because the domain isn't managed by them (in theory). If your registrar is bad and you have a .uk domain, you can write to Nominet (the body that handles .uk domains) to gain direct access to it. That said, there are some services to avoid. Godaddy have a habit of disregarding the law when it comes to domain ownership, and the US government claims ownership over all .com and .net domains.

I use namecheap . com and have never had any problems; after the initial setup with a domain registrar you pretty much never have to deal with them again, and namecheap is cheap =) Bear in mind my information is about a year old, though.

I've been using 123-reg for a number of years and now they've finally hit the 20th century and added Paypal, they're fine.

Mainly though, as long as you keep your hosting and your domain names separate, you can't go too far wrong. Unless it's GoDaddy then that's wrong ;)

It's only naming so you're not limited to anything and can as cheap as possible. It's basically just a URL that redirects to your blog or website.

The problem is though, it's really hard to come up with a name that isn't already chosen you're comfortable with for a long amount of time.

That's probably because it used to say, if I remember correctly, "I'm writing a blog, ... ".

Anyway, I've had some experience with these domain services, and the only times I ever had contact with them was when setting up the domain, and cancelling it. Especially if you're just linking to an existing site hosted somewhere else, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

They've since retracted their views, after losing a solid chunk of their clientele.

I use dreamhost for domains as well as hosting, but that's just convenience on my part. Hosting's a crapshoot when it comes to providers, but it's kinda hard to screw up domain parking.
