It strikes me now that there's really not much truly, truly good videogame music. There's very little jazz or particularly out-there electronica, for instance, which saddens me.

That said, in the same way that the jazz musicians of the 30s-40s and whatever used musicals and other shite as their "standards" and turned them to gold, some young people now are doing amazing stuff with the popular music they grew up with:

Eve Online (how did I miss this? It's ambient techno bliss and you get the whole soundtrack in MP3 when you buy the game)

Katamari Damacy (the first 2 games' soundtracks are why I bought a PS2)

and also Civilization 4 has an epic, approximately 12-hour soundtrack

This was actually harder than I thought, thinking of things I'd actually want to listen to many times, fitting different moods and not just going for "that sweet tune at the third boss". Maybe I'm over-thinking a hypothetical situation though. It is hypothetical.. right?
