And there's that unannounced PC exclusive isn't there?

The Unreal Development Kit is a great thing for PC gaming. They do more than enough for the platform with this.

Yeah, the UDK is nice. But they don't seem interested in funding games other than high profile shooters.

This is great news indeed! We all know People Can Fly did really well after Epic bought them! It's like Epic can never become some soulless, corporate abomination that got stupid rich by selling the same game three times in a row!

Bulletstorm was PCF and Epic Games, not just one of them.

Not so much PC, but Epic did make iOS ARPG Infinity Blade and XBLA platform adventure Shadow Complex (which does have shooting, but more in the Metroidvania sense) between Gears of War 2 and 3, so I wouldn't say that they only bother with shooters.

Maybe Alabama or the UK? Lots of places have really nice corporate wellfare programs.

    A Message from Tim Sweeney

    We’re closing Impossible Studios.

When former members of Big Huge Games approached Epic last year, we saw the opportunity to help a great group of people while putting them to work on a project that needed a team. It was a bold initiative and the Impossible folks made a gallant effort, but ultimately it wasn’t working out for Epic.
In addition to providing Impossible Studios employees with 3 months of severance pay, we’ll be giving the team the opportunity to form a new company with the Impossible Studios name and the awesome Impossibear logo.
This means that Infinity Blade: Dungeons is now on hold as we figure out the future of the project.
    -Tim Sweeney, Founder, Epic Games

    That blows.

Aww. That seems like a lot of goodwill though, doesn't sound like your usual corporate "we're kicking all of you out" thing.

Yeah, it does look like they tried, but it wasn't really working, and at the end of the day, Epic is still a company that has to consider earnings, costs and all that.

Nice/strange of Epic to allow them to reuse both the team name and logo though, that's quite a rare thing nowadays.

Oh no ones saying the severance package isn't good..it's just a shame to see another studio be closed.

No, but it isn't as bad as what usually happens to game devs. Sucks that they have lost their jobs and I hope they find new work soon. Still, it's worth noting that there is some little good mixed with a lot of the bad.

I can't imagine them actually trying to turn Impossible Studios into an independent. At this point the team is going to be looked at as poison by any major publisher: Dropped by THQ several years ago, picked up by 38 Studios long enough to release one game that (arguably) bankrupted the company, picked up by Epic and then shut down six months later without even releasing a game. This doesn't add up to 'this is a talented team that I want to work with.'

Could you explain what's the fuss about ? What makes this developer special ? They have the lead designer of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (contradiction). They've made a game some people like. What am I missing ?

In my case, it's simply that Rise of Nations is (by far) the best RTS ever made IMO. That the studio that made it will never make another is a very, very sad thing.

Wonder if Epic is gearing up to become a company solely focused on game engine development and support, abandoning game creation entirely.
