CLANG: A sword fighting game by Neal Stephenson

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/260688528/clang

Worth watching just for the Gabe Newell cameo.

This thing is going to make a lot of money. This project reminds me of the endless debates I used to have (some of them with you guys!) about lightsaber combat in games (especially when KOTOR, then TOR came out) and why it's all nerf bats.

I'm sorry, all I can think about is the compiler.

"How will this be different than Soul Caliber?" you ask...

No I don't, I've never heard of game called "Soul Caliber". "Soul Calibur" or "SoulCalibur", yes.

Well, seriously now. I didn't really get what this game will aim to be. So, it'll be, at least first, a 1v1 dueling swordsman game? Okay, cool. What, I should be using a 3rd party motion controller? Erm... and it will be a story-driven game? I don't know. It might be good, but something's off and I can't quite place my finger on it.

I'll just leave this here link

Just get the license for the game, update it's texture pack and we'll all be slashing awkwardly at those fucking goblins on that raft floating down the underground river again like it's 1998

I'm not really interested in the concept per se, but I do like Neal Stephenson's work and this was one of the funniest Kickstarter videos I've seen so far, so I'll be keepin an eye on this. Maybe a future update might convince me to actually contribute.

I admire the sceneing of the video, but then I glazed over without understanding anything.

Its not your fault, I'm tired, I'll try again tomorrow.

    Low-latency, high-precision motion controller
Good luck with that, I'd happily replace my mouse with an accurate motion control for more mundane tasks too.

Looks interesting but without more information I won't be backing.

I think the idea is to make a serious swordfighting game rather than a hilarious comedy flailing game, though.

I recently was looking up various tournaments of medieval sword fight tournaments and stuff, and I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't work with some sort of Toribash-esque turn-based interface than some awkward mouse-based thing.

    1. I'm wondering what controller they think it would work with.

    2. How would they handle movement/positioning when all their motion control is going to be for sword fighting?

    3. They aim for realism but still has a health bar?

Why the hell they first talk about realism and then there is a sword swinging animation where there is some ridiculous anime-like blue trail of magic sparkles following the blade?

I don't know. If there's one thing that the Wii has taught me, it's that I'd much rather push a trigger button to swing a sword. =\

Whoa. There's plenty of room for cynicism without being unfair. They were talking about combat fidelity, and realistic handling, not realistic graphical effects. Also, this is probably pre-alpha level stuff, and the trails could easily be a dev-tool to help visualize what the weapons are doing in real time.

My main concern is the peripheral issue, as well. I like the idea, but I have yet to use a motion control that would function well, un-moded, for what they describe. Or that hits a price-point I'd be able to afford for a single game.

There's that cool gesture thing supposed to be coming out at the end of the year for $80.

Jeez, (most of) you guys are so cynical. I have little interest in a non-mouse driven sword fighting simulator myself--and won't be funding it--but that kickstarter video is the bomb. I don't think any pitch I've seen comes close.

Analogue stick or D-pad on the controller I would suppose.

I love Neal Stephenson and I like Gabe Newell.

That said, an all-star cast doesn't necessarily create a good production. R. A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane didn't save Kingdoms of Amalur.

That video was so, so amazing. Does anyone else think Neal Stephenson speaks a bit like Mark Ruffalo?

I couldn't help but think they could have saved some money towards their goal by going with a more barebones trailer.

I sure hope this doesn't herald a trend towards more extravagant and ludicrous Kickstarter trailers.
