Tropa de Elite, I guess. Most satisfying violence since Verhoeven's glory days.

Does Inception count? If not I'd probably go for District 9 or We Were Soldiers.

I can enjoy a pure action movie, but find it difficult to take the genre seriously when it's trying to take itself so seriously. Max Payne knows what I mean. Big Trouble in Little China is perfect. Deadly king fu, magic, and Kurt Russell reduced to an Asian guy's sidekick whilst everyone they encounter obliviously acts like he's the real badass. Genius.
The Last Action Hero is also one of my favourites, but in places the movie was way too... dark.
I mean Jesus, what the hell is this?

I was tempted to put down Chronicles of Riddick but I save that for best Sci-fi ever. And yes I am a huge Star Wars fan but Riddick is #1 for me.
Pure action I would say the newest Rambo film, or Saving Private Ryan.

As far as favorite action scene I'd have to go with the lobby scene in The Matrix. The second and third films ruined the series for me, but man was the first one awesome.
Also I'm a sucker for Jet Li films.
I know it's not an action movie, but the D-Day landing in Saving Private Ryan is probably the best action sequence ever filmed.
My opinions of course, feel free to disagree.

Best Actionmovie: The Matrix (Wachowski bros)
Most consistently great actionmovie director: James Cameron
Best Actionscenes: Hardboiled (John Woo)
John Woo's actionscenes in the late 80's and early 90's blow everyone else's away. It's a shame that the movies wrapped around those scenes don't quite measure up. I mean what was Hardboiled even about? Some undercover cop mumbojumbo zzzzzzzzzzzzzz... A Better Tomorrow and Face Off are his best overall movies I would say. Both the action and the story are compelling in those.

Disappointed to see a complete lack of Jean Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagull in this thread. Disappointed, but not surprised.
I'd probably vote for Kill Bill (pt1), but I can't help feeling I've missed something.

For pure kinetics I'd probably go with Hardboiled, but definitely give the fisticuffs in the first and third Bourne movies an honourable mention (the second one was too shaky cam tbh).
