A genre established, of course, with Darkman.

Just as a great film that happens to include an action scene doesn't make for a "great action film", nor does great action alone make for a great action film, IMO.

Maybe I should have a Liam Neeson marathon starting with that. Or Rob Roy.

A few kung fu movies have been mentioned thus far. Which movie do y'all think is Jet Li's best? I say Fist of Legend, followed by Twin Warriors, and the two Legend movies (some of you may know most of them by different names). For some reason when I was younger I thought the character from Twin Warriors was the same from The Legend 1 & 2. Silly child.

Well I'm not exactly throwing Oldboy on here. When the entire movie is great action, I'd say it qualifies.

Indeed. Also looking forward to Taken 2. The first one was completely daft but a great popcorn movie.

    A

Because we're talking about BEST of BEST,and those don't belong there, even if they're pretty good they are not best action movies in my eyes :D

That's not what he's saying. What he's saying is that an actionmovie needs more than just great action to be a great actionmovie, the other parts of the movie need to measure up as well.

I haven't seen The Raid (yet), mind you. It's defenitely on my "to see" list though.

    Last Action Hero !

Well more seriously it's a tough call. I might say Die hard or Alien 2. Speed and Matrix (there is only one) are good too.

    Does Heat qualify ?

I understood Rii's sentiment, but I don't see how it holds up for Raid Redemption. I'll take Raid's threadbone plot over T2 or Aliens' cringe-ridden dialogue any day. It serves its purpose without detracting from the film at all.

I haven't seen the first one, but the second and third are good martial arts flicks. The plots aren't all that great, they were still worth watching for fighting movie fans.

The Rock >>> Face Off = Con Air > Matrix > Terminator 2 > Crank > Die Hard = Lethal Weapon

Ah, The Rock. Michael Bay's only good movie. But let's face it, with a cast like that it was beyond even Bay's power to make a hash of it.

It's too hard to name just one, so I won't try.

Mad max 2 deserves to be mentioned.

I'll brook no man badmouthing Bad Boys II. That is a movie for the ages.

Action movies are tricky. My favourite kung fu movie is Hero (Ying Xiong), but they don't really compare to shooty gun action movies. Hell, Hero is hard to compare to something like Ong Bak or Drunken Master just like Crouching Tiger is.

For shooty action films I'd have to go for Black Hawk Down (Extended). Unless we're talking about mindless popcorn films, in which case you can't go wrong with a bit of Die Hard (best xmas movie ever). Although I do like some Boondock Saints. And Rambo IV. And Bad Boys II for that matter. And so many others, as there is no single greatest action film - much of it depends on your mood at the time.

    Hardboiled or Aliens.

T2 is a great action movie, but T1 is a much better movie all around.

I hate side quests. If you can't be bothered to write a decent enough story to fill a game, then just hire a writer that can. Enough of these filler quests that really turn an interesting game into a grind.
