I hate side quests. If you can't be bothered to write a decent enough story to fill a game, then just hire a writer that can. Enough of these filler quests that really turn an interesting game into a grind.

I agree: Over the past three decades we took one step back. But it was after two steps forward and with any hope - or Hope™ - we're about to embark on another two steps forward.
Maybe it's just my immaturity poking out but I am physically incapable of not thinking of Halle Berry's nappy dugout when Bulworth is mentioned.
