    Secret World Free Weekend

So... I baled out after ten minutes. Four or five cutscenes and then I was in the subway tapping 1 2 3 as crazies chewed my health to nothing. Not exactly what I expected.

I probably misunderstood this game entirely, but I thought it was about puzzles and investigations. Can you play it that way or is the combat always the focus?

Last night I spent 40-50 minutes completing a puzzle quest that involved googling, working through a created website and following GPS directions in reverse, you get a lot of XP for puzzle quests and they're pretty great but no unfortunately you cant play the game without combat, I will say it gets a lot more interesting as you get more skills (and as such options) but yeah you're going to have to fight quite a lot I am afraid

Good thing they are testing the infrastructure before they go free to play.

Outside of wandering around in Anarchy Online shortly after release and finding nothing to do, the only MMO I've played was Guild Wars, for just a couple weeks after launch; yawn.

I'm surprised I'm actually giving the The Secret World a try, even if only for free. The non-medieval fantasy setting helps; super yawn.

It's good to see you are going into it open minded.

I've heard nothing but bad things about this game. I played it during the open beta weekend for a few hours and wasn't impressed either.

Apart from plenty of good reviews including this very site, its ok to not like it but it has done some interesting things and i think its a bit unfair to dismiss it out of hand

I'll trust my friends' opinions more than "good reviews" any day of the week.

I fail to see how "it has good reviews" trumps "I don't like it."

I will play it today and let you know if you should all play it.
Don't do anything either way until I give the word.

Haha quite right, I think I misunderstood hypernetic so sorry about that, I thought you meant you had heard nothing positive about it in the sense that reviews etc had all been poor, obviously your friends (and your own experience) are going to be a better judge for you and I wasnt trying to say otherwise

Cynicism up front, open to revision in the back.

As someone who hasn't played MMOs before, I've been playing for three weeks and love it. Very smooth launch and, lucky stooge that I am, have yet to encounter any real gamebreaking bugs. That said, it's definitely something that takes a while to sink into, and I don't think a single weekend will accomplish that. If you play for half an hour, it's too easy to dismiss it as a WoW clone.

It'd be fun to hang with a few RPS readers later tonight or tomorrow. Which server are you guys on?

    Revisionism sounds painful.

Anyone else beside me having trouble getting this free weekend thingy to work? I made an account, but for some reason I can't log in while inside the game. And on the account page it does not say anything.

Obviously it has to be a very special MMO for which I have considerable feelings for any revision to take place.

So far I've found it to be somewhat engaging. Characters are interesting, the world is colorful, and it's not the same old unimaginative medieval fantasy nonsense, so the lore is fairly fresh to me. As one might expect, entry level combat is hella repetitive when playing solo. It seems there's probably a decent story in here, but being limited to fetching, finding and solving kind of stymies any kind of deeper involvement. It's an MMO though, so what was I expecting? Based on a few hours of play it's about what I figured it would be, perhaps a little better, but not $15 a month better. The modern-day supernatural vibe in an RPG sort of takes me back to Vampire: Bloodlines, which makes me pause and think: three hours into that game and I was already knee-deep in a wholly engrossing experience. MMOs feel... so... dragged... out.

If I can manage to squeeze in some more time before the free weekend is up, maybe I'll squeeze in some revision as well.

Yeah, I didn't see any kind of confirmation on that page, nor did I receive an e-mail. I tried logging in a few minutes after signing up and couldn't get in. When I tried again several hours later it worked.
