I love CoH. I played through it again a few months ago.

I rediscovered it a couple of months ago after bouncing off the difficulty curve when it was first released, so it's pretty new to me. One of the best games I've ever played - if anyone fancies a MP skirmish, let me know.

Just in case someone does not own this game by now:
In the THQ Online Download Store hingy the Gold Edition is down to 1,40 Euros (down from 7 Euros).
This does not include the Tales of Valor addon but in my personal oppinion you are not really missing something with this one.

I always found it odd that although DoW2 uses an upgraded version of the engine, it always felt more advanced in CoH.
Read more here (now 50% less regular!) or on Twitter!

Advanced how? If you mean graphics, it must be because DoW2 has lasers and stuff, where CoH is sober and realistic.

The 1.40 euros thing is interesting, checking it out. Is there any real online gamebase atm to play some skirmish or something?

DoW2's focus is more of a semi-RPG, whereas CoH is closer to a pure RTS, thus more complex in some ways (more units, base building).

I can say that I semi-regularly come back to many Relic games, CoH and Homeworld 2 being the two most frequent.

CoH Gold is 8 euros atm on the THQ store, apparently.

While playing yesterday i ended up pondering why Relic's so brilliant RTS are not so popular and highly held as Blizzard's?
Granted SC and WC are good games, but also in reality i prefer Relic's games largely over them. Am i an unique and beautiful snowflake or what?

I'd say it's mostly the case of balance. Or lack of it.

Maybe i am too much of a noob or something, but i really prefer the more tactic approach of CoH and DoW, where fighting is almost constant but also fights take more time, base building exists but is minimal... I never bought SC2 cause i knew i will suck too much at going over 9000 cpm and micro controlling 150 units while building a base and managing exacly where each drone/scv/probe goes.

Dawn of War had some competitive scene in Euro I believe.

I think the problem is it does not get world wide appeal, especially from Asia. Look at DOTA, League of Legends. Big scenes in China with Dota, LoL is everywhere.

Brood War had a limited leagues outside Korea (ICCup, NA was nothing) but Blizzard built off the hype of the Korea Starleagues and got the world involved into Starcraft II.

Also CoH is a bit more slower paced than Starcraft and might not be as appealing to an audience.

Sux that hype is usually the biggest drive in game popularity.

As i mentioned, to me the slower pace is actually a plus. I hope CoH 2 will be as awesome as it looks by the interviews and info we've seen so far.

Oh darn. I was in the progress of clearing back log and now I want to play again too >:|

What stops CoH/DoW from being popular in competitive play is that there's a lot of randomness (ie realism) in gameplay. Competitive players want builds and hard numbers, if they don't have that, they don't care about the game. Sure, CoH has builds, but the game needs you to change tactics a lot more, and sometimes only because you got/didn't get a lucky shot.

Holy shit, i just patched this thing to like 2601 or something like that, the patching was mega slow and HUGE but damn, the menu is all changed, there's more graphical options and stuff... Haven't seen the gameplay changes yet, but still - wow!

FriendlyFire - I guess you are right, but don't CoH/DoW use hard-set values as well, only smartly disguised as visually missing shots etc which is actually just lower DPS on units? Or is it more like Total War where units do miss ranged attacks and each even though you command "squads" every single unit alive in a squad still adds to the DPS of the whole squad?
