Is everyone OK with: Dark Charge, with each match played from both ends; bids are independent of each other (which means you might end up defending in both your games against given opponent, or attacking in both); 4 people in each division (meaning 6 matches each); divisions ordered as per the end of last season; and no restrictions on unit types?

If there are no objections then I'll put up the tables and instructions first thing Saturday morning.

    Season 12 starts here

    And we're off!

Here are the tables. As ever, it is your responsibility to challenge everyone above you in your division (see here if you're not sure), and this time you also have to make the map available for download somewhere. When you receive a challenge you must also challenge your opponent back on the same map.

    Game rules and league procedures

    1) Each game must conform to the following settings:

    Mode: Dark Charge
    Turn limit: seven turns
    Turn duration
: five seconds per turn (i.e. 5000 milliseconds - this is the default setting)
    Visibility: vis at time zero
Team strength: four men per player
    Mutators: at the challengers discretion
    Server: UK1

Any game that does not conform to these rules will be void and must be replayed. You may not reuse maps - a new map must be generated for each challenge. Please see the next post if you're not sure how to create a game with the correct settings, and post in this thread if you are in any doubt.

    2) After creating each game on server UK1, the challenger must upload the map then state the challenge in this thread. Format: "[Player1] has challenged [Player2] in game [game ID 1], map: [URL]".

Example: "ColOfNature has challenged Xune in game 123456".

    3) On receiving this challenged player downloads the map and issues the return challenge and gives the details in this thread as above (e.g. "[Player2] has challenged [Player1] in game [game ID 2] in response to [game ID 1]").

    4) After each game has been completed, the player accepting the challenge must report the result in this thread. Standard format: "[Victorious player] has defeated [defeated player] in game [game ID] scoring [score]". The score can be found in the result notification at the end of the match - post the exat value, even if it's negative. (A negative score just means that the challenger lost the match).

Example: "Xune has defeated ColOfNature in game 123456 scoring -20".

In the event of a draw, the format is "[Challenging player] and [challenged player] have drawn in game [game ID]."

Example: "ColOfNature and Xune have drawn in game 123456".

I will update the spreadsheet with the result of each game. Scores will be as normal: 3 pts for a win, 1 for a draw, but tie-breakers will be on overall FS result scores.

    5) Challengers may start issuing their challenges from today (Saturday 01 September). All games must be completed by the end of Saturday 15 September (but as we're doing something different there'll be plenty of leeway).

    6) We're all reasonable people, when pressed, so some flexibility will be applied. If you're going to be on holiday, or travelling to distant worlds, or otherwise restricted in your availability, please post in this thread and we will try to accommodate you as far as is reasonably practical.

    7) Try to start your games in the first week and finish them early. Players leaving it to the last minute to issue a challenge or submit orders risk forfeiting the game. If any game is unfinished by the deadline I will declare both parties personae-non-grata and award your points to whoever offers me the most fruit in bribes.

    8) The divisions and rules for season 13 will be Arranged some time after the close of season 12.

    9) Any circumstances not catered for in these rules will be handled according to some combination of common sense, consensus, iron-fisted authoritarianism and whimsy. Mostly the latter.

Finally, a polite reminder that although PMing your email address to me is optional, it will make organisation easier so please consider doing so if you haven't already.

Also, if I've missed anything important or anything isn't clear then post below, PM me or email me either at ColOfNature or RockPaperSynapse on gmail to let me know.

    Good luck!

How to issue an initial challenge:

    1) Log in to server UK1.
    2) Click the 'Online' button at the top of the screen
    3) Click 'Create a game'
    4) Click the 'Advanced setup' button
    5) Click the 'Generate charge' button
    6) If you get a silly map, or if you don't have four men per side, repeat the previous step until you're happy.
    7) Click 'Save level' then enter a meaningful name (I'd suggest some abbreviation of your and your opponent's name, e.g. if I was challenging RodeoClown I might enter 'Col-vs-rc') and click 'Okay'. If you forget this step, see my next post.
    8) Click the 'Submit' button
    9) Ensure that the 'Game mode' is set to 'Charge'
    10) Ensure that the 'Vis mode' is set to 'Vis at time zero'
    11) Ensure that the 'Turn limit' is set to 7 and the 'Turn length' to 5000, which are the defaults the default)
    12) Activate Mutators, if you like (although you'll only be able to do this if you own the Red DLC)
    13) Enter your opponent's username
    14) Enter 'RPS League' or something suitable so that your opponent knows it's for this league
    15) Click the 'Submit' button
    16) Upload the map to whatever service you prefer
    17) Take your first turn and note the challenge in this thread, using the format in the post directly above this one

    How to return a challenge:

Before you start download the map from wherever your opponent has put it then follow the instructions above. When you reach step 5:
    5) Click 'Load level' and enter the name of the map
    6) Go to step 8

Maps can be found in, and should be saved to, the 'psychoff\data\userLevels\' directory under the Frozen Synapse install location (edit: on Linux it actually seems to be under ~/.local/share/FrozenSynapse/. I assume it's still in the install folder on Windows. I'll check tomorrow and edit this post). For uploading I'll be using Dropbox - feel free to use that link if you need an account, I get extra space for everyone who signs up using it - but you can use anything you like. If you don't know where to upload it to you can email it to me at ColOfNature or RockPaperSynapse on gmail. You might even be able to attach them to the forum post. I should probably have checked if that was possible.

I forgot to save my first map vs Fumarole, so you've got two challenges from me, but if you want to play it for fun, I'd love to play that one too!

    ---
One thing we could try next time is using the fixed map, so we all play exactly the same map - could be interesting.

If you forget to save your map it's automatically saved under 'psychoff\data\encounters\' named 'ref<game ID>.enc'. I just discovered that. So you don't really need to save the map yourself, you could just lift it from there.

Also, when you're loading the maps you don't need to type the '.enc' on the end of the filename, FS will do that for you.

Ah, I've never used the saved files, I assumed it would be there somewhere, but I wasn't sure where.
In that case, Fumarole, here's the original map - feel free to use whichever map you'd prefer and I can change the game number to reflect that :)

Seeing as you're not all that late I could probably just shoe-horn you into the third division if you like, and if none of the guys already there object to playing a couple of extra matches. Any objections?

The one I played a turn in will be the map for the league. I really dig the middle building, I foresee many deaths happening there. Would you prefer to play both sides concurrently, or one after the other?

The other map I'll be glad to play for fun when our two games are concluded.

Thanks. I hope no one objects. I was off the grid for a long time. I need my fix of games now :P

I'm going to take the lack of comment from the rest of division three as a ringing endorsement of your entry into the competition. Welcome back. Get chargin'.

I won this match with a score of 111 points. GG rodeo, I'll send the match from the other side later on, gonna head out now with the little lady.

Sorry folks, I forgot to say: post the exact score, even if it's negative. In this case the score was -111 because the challenger was defeated. I ought to be able to work out which way round it should be from context, but I'd get confused eventually and make a mistake.

I just remembered that challengers can pick what side to play as. It's probably a good idea to ignore that this time to avoid confusion, but next time it may make things easier. This way the map file doesn't need to be exchanged.

Good point - I'd forgotten that too. It would certainly make things simpler.
