    Nationalism and You!

I see a bit of it goes on around the forums already, so I figured maybe we should have a thread for it, link things your proud of your country for, or things your not happy with about your country I guess?

Remeber the forum rules and keep it civil!

I'll start with: The Nuclear Weapons are morally indefensible speech made by our then priminister. (audio here)

And on a sillier note, this:

Winning anything is such a massive deal, that we need also parody it!

    So what about your country?

Are you able to explain what that means? I've only had a quick look at that site, but it doesn't really explain what it is they're talking about.

According to Wiki, FSI is measured like this:

The index's ranks are based on twelve indicators of state vulnerability - four social, two economic and six political. The indicators are not designed to forecast when states may experience violence or collapse. Instead, they are meant to measure a state's vulnerability to collapse or conflict. All countries in the red (Alert, FSI of 90 or more), orange (Warning, FSI of 60 or more), or yellow (Moderate, FSI of 30 or more) categories display some features that make parts of their societies and institutions vulnerable to failure. Some in the yellow zone may be failing at a faster rate than those in the more dangerous orange or red zones, and therefore could experience violence sooner. Conversely, some in the red zone, though critical, may exhibit some positive signs of recovery or be deteriorating slowly, giving them time to adopt mitigating strategies

I refer you to Bill Bailey:

Also being Scottish (and hence a massive part of those stats! - http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/we...burger-1272642) I get to have not only British national pride but Scottish national pride (which is generally a lot easier to handle as it mostly involves wearing a kilt and taking the piss out of the English, with bonus points for doing both at the same time!)

We invented the modern torpedo, we have one the cleanest seas, our handball team is among the best in the world, many of our cultural heritages are under UNESCO protection, Nikola Tesla was born and raised in our country and he was half Croatian.

I have nothing against Croatia, I'm spending my honeymoon there in one month time. Everything you say is valid, although claiming the 'Modern Topredo', did made me snigger.

You also have awesome bendy trains from what I'm told.

Our trains suck and they drive horribly slow because of our lousy railroads.

We owned half the world, bitch. Now we're like fantasy dwarves, grumbling over the lost glories of our fallen empire.

But we still have fish & chips.

We owned and roflstomped your fleets whilst having a much smaller starting area with significantly fewer resources :P.

I would put up "Being more tolerant of different opinions, countries of origin, sexual orientations, religion, etc. etc. etc then every other damn country in the world", but this has changed over the last 10 years.

Oh, and the water. Very very much all the stuff we do with land and water. And dikes. It has been one of the reasons I am studying that at university.

    Never 4get.

OT, I don't think that having a little pride in your country is unhealthy, but going to the extent of nationalism is.

The problem is the term "nationalism" has been hijacked in recent times to mean "anybody who doesn't go on a self-hatred trip about how Western civilisation is the downfall of man", much like "fascism" has changed from "a rather unappealing system of government" to "those damn police booked me for speeding in a school zone and enforced other laws and shit".

Oh? My experience (here in Finland) has been that the term "nationalism" has been hijacked in recent times to mean "all the lower races are coming to take away our jobs, and I hate gays and feminism too".

The NHS. It's pretty awesome. Yeah, has some problem of course, any system as complex and big as that will have issues but in general its a fucking amazing institution.

Shame it's in the process of being dismantled by the government we elected. I say we, I mean the retards I share this country with, I voted labour because despite their many many flaws, their base ideology isn't inherently evil.

Here are some cool things my country has produced to counter balance the bitter rage:

    Winston-Churchill.jpg

I write about them video games at these locations

    And on Twitter

You're kidding, right? Labour are even more authoritarian than the LibDems are, at the moment. Removing self determination from people is inherently evil. Enforced wealth redistribution is not a moral approach to the issue of poverty. For crying out loud, the best party to vote for if you're leftist at the moment is the Conservative party, and that's really not saying much. Labour is a shambles, and the NuLabour reactionaries are driving them even further towards a completely authoritarian system.

As for the topic at hand... I'm proud of our Finest Hour. I think it's hard not to be, to be honest. I'm proud of our colonial history, that we managed to beat out continental Europe to become the dominant power. Punching above our weight, so to speak. There are too many figures to list them all, but top of my list, I'm proud of Alan Turing. Without him, I'd probably have a qualification in languages and be stuck just being a language teacher (ignoring the fact that someone else would've developed the tech, you know what I mean). Currently, I'm proud that we're the voice of dissent within the EU. Someone's gotta stand up to them, and Nigel Farage is the perfect figurehead. There are tonnes of things I'm proud of, I'll probably post again later when I'm not in game.

You 1/32 native or whatever it is you have to be these days? There's nothing wrong with being proud of your nation's history.
