New War Of The Roses: Gameplay Video - Anyone else get into the BETA?

    Hey,

Haven't edited any videos in quite a while and a friend of mine got me access to the BETA verison of the game so I made a 4 minute showreel which I would highly recommend it if you're a fan of (arguably) the greatest British comedy ever made.

As I said in the SS thread...
Personally i'm on the fence with the game. Visually some levels look awesome and others are a real eyesore. Gameplay wise, I still prefer Warbands combat. The controls are in fact very similar to Warband. Move your mouse to the left and right click to block in that direction and left click to attack. There are new moves thrown in like the ability to shield bash and charge an enemy (sometimes knocking them to the floor). It also has a full unlock and perks system similar to that of a a F2P game like blacklight. It could easily have been Warband 2 from a gameplay perspective but is very clumsy and glitchy. Hopefully the feedback from the beta will push the developers to fix some of the more major issues e.g. You are practically unbeatable with a spear and shield as the attacks are so quick it's physically impossible to block or attack back.

    Some screens:

There's a written preview (not by me) here

Did anyone else manage to get into the Beta. What are your impressions so far? Or, if not, what are your opinions of the game from what you've seen/read?

    Nice video.

Is it me or do the units move a bit too fast? From the video it feels like armor doesn't have any weight.
Play Arma2:CO with us. (It isn't nearly as difficult as you might think.)

It's okay to not like things.

Thanks man. When you start moving forward it's at a light jog then after about 5 seconds you start running. If you hit F then you do a charge move where you sprint forward and can knock enemies over. THis normally takes about 10-15 seconds to recharge before you can use it again. It does look a bit silly though as you move ridiculously fast.

On a side note - how do you embed videos on here?

Looks clumsy as fuck, animations are low quality stuff. I do like the deathcam though, but I imagine it gets old quick.

Whats the game like though? It doesnt seem to be a persistent world thing, so is it just random battles like M&B (Didnt play Warband) or are there overarching goals?

It's essentially an online focused, medieval Battlefield. There is supposed to be a single player campaign but, from what i've read, it looks like it will just be the Multi maps with bots ala Red Orchestra 2 (hopefully not though). It has the standard modes you'd expect e.g. Team Deathmatch, Conquest (dominate more flags on the map than the other team) and some others that will come with the final game. You can choose from a number of preset character types or you cxan customise your own. Experience is essentially a currency that you can use to unlock various perks, weapons and armor.

RPS did a good preview a few months back:

There's also a more recent preview of the beta here:

and yeah, the death animations get old fast especially since people can interrupt them so you may end up watching yourself get stabbed i nthe face 5 or 6 times before you actually die.

Overall though, I really enjoyed the beta and i'm looking forward to seeing what improvements they make before the final release.

I haven't installed the beta, been playing other stuff. I played quite a bit in the alpha tho and liked it rather much. Not a big surprise though since I'm a huge Mount and Blade fanboi.

There's perks to reduce encumbrance of armour and weapons on all the default classes, hence they're a bit nippy. You can customise once you hit level 5 though which creates an interesting choice, since you can only take two perks in each slot (offence, defence, movement and support) so you're forced to choose between low weapon encumbrance or better stabbity death capability.

It only triggers when you execute an opponent (prevents their team mates being able to revive them, and gives a little gold and XP). You can yield while on the ground to go back to the respawn.

I got into the beta and have some thoughts on it, however I think I'm still under NDA.

The short story? I like it. (I've never played M&B though.)

I don't have the beta myself, but from what I have seen, I can't say that I'm impressed. The animations looks like crap. Is that humans or robots running around with swords?. I don't really understand why Paradox wanted to do this game so badly. I mean they already have the excellent m&b IP. So why do a worse version of that?

Yes. Playing since Alpha. Lot of fun but still a lot of issues to fix before release. Beta is beta. But still very promissing.

There are no bots in the game yet. It does seem really odd that they'd make a clone of their own game instead of concentrating on making a great sequel to Warband. The only think I can think is that they wanted WOTR to essentially be like a standalone version of CRPG which focuses on smaller scale combat and Mount & Blade 2 will be much broader in scope and scale e.g. hundreds of units, castle sieges (w/ destructable walls, trebuchets etc) & a more polished single player.

Also, can someone please explain how to embed videos on here. I tried copying the embed code from youtube but it doesn't work.

Seph, there's an 'Insert Video' button in the formatting toolbar when you are writing your post. Just use that. Liked the music, seemed quite fitting.

Got into the beta and been playing a bit during the weekend. I can't decide if I like it enough to buy though. Looks like a better looking and smaller M&B and the deathcams are nice as well. Also I like the sounds, especially when horses and people are charging you.

However I decided I m useless at melee fighting (just like M&B). Sunday had some success as an archer but I get my ass kicked as soon as there is an enemy nearby. Archer seems a bit arbitrary though, I can't see very well the drop on arrows in long distances. I will be playing more of it in the future. What servers are people playing on?
