Their page about submissions states that Greenlight is the only way onto Steam. So no, it really doesn't, even though it was assumed that the people who previously had contracts with them wouldn't be affected.

People with prior relationships with Valve can be exempted from Greenlight, though won't necessarily be (Wadjet Eye for example, finally got Resonance on the old-fashioned way, then had to go through Greenlight for Primordia).

Also there are still games that were submitted the old fashioned way pre-Greenlight that are still in the queue to be assessed that way, once that backlog is cleared, things might change again.

I think we've linked to the page that says there's no other way onto Steam, in this thread, about 200 times now.

So I'm not posting it again

I don't buy it tho - I don't think they're stupid enough to say "we won't look for games for Steam - we'll wait until people come and play our stupid popularity contest" - they cannot be that dumb.

My disappointment comes from thinking that they were maybe interested in seeking out interesting games to sell me - if they only want developers to 'perform' then all I'll get are games which I either already know about or which are designed for that core group of people who will vote for any fucking thing which has zombies in it, isn't Flash and has a gun hovering in the lower-right corner of the screen - no thanks either way.

p.s. if anything Valve have said around Greenlight is true, there really is a massive opportunity for other sites to step-in and undermine their popularity right now.

I don't think Steam has had a great season - most of the 'real bargains' of the Thanksgiving and Christmas Sales were on Amazon, GMG, GG (lol) and not Steam.

OK - Steam has that crowd of people who never look elsewhere - perhaps that's all Valve cares about - but I think there's a real, genuine opportunity for people to undermine Steam - ESPECIALLY for indie games which have precisely no fucking chance at all of getting through Greenlight

I've even started to use Desura - how much worse can it get!?

    p.s. and yes, Bundles...

Desura's actually pretty nice once you learn that most interaction with the library, other than launching games, has to be done by right-clicking.

Also, it's the only place that I know has a client and still offers DRM-free, standalone, no-questions-asked downloads straight off the site.

The problem isn't the catalog either. They have a decent catalog. It's that the people that would make it a GOOD or GREAT catalog often overlook it.

Someone on GOG mentioned that KRZ got Greenlit. Then I saw this.

Would have posted that earlier but I was on an iPhone haha.

Frog Fractions was merely an honourable mention, not a finalist. Still, I wonder if the various free games are going to take up Steam's offer for distribution on their store. Steam offers free games already (most recently: Alien Swarm, Super Crate Box) so there's a chance they can just chuck 'em up there for no cost.

If anyone was in any doubt that the IGF is nothing to do with games and everything to do with artistic posing and voting for your mate's games, that has to close the deal really doesn't it?

    Still no Inquisitor?
How the FUCK is an American McGee game approved over Inquisitor?
Fuck Valve for inventing Greenlight. And fuck the Steam community.

Probably because Inquisitor, while interesting for the dialogue (of hte first town, at least) has complete garbage gameplay. And most people who care enough to do even a cursory search will find that out and get turned off, even if the dialogue is totally worth cheating your way through for.
    Steam: Gundato
    PSN: Gundato
If you want me on either service, I suggest PMing me here first to let me know who you are.

Once again, pretty much the run of the mill Greenlight stuff gets approved. Platformers, RPG and adventures, while all the lesser mainstream genres get ignored. These are probably the only genres you'll ever see coming out of Greenlight, its a flawed system.

Good for Age of Decadence. Good for me (+Steam key). Can't wait to be a loremaster and slay mine enemies with (fuck yeah) knowledge.

So basically fuck Steam and Valve for not catering to my tastes, and my tastes alone? I need to look up this Inquisitor game if it's mere omission in this round of Greenlight picks gets this reaction from you.

Anyway, great to see La-Mulana and Age of Decadence make it on to Steam.
