    SPAZ, General Impressions?

So i remember quite a few months ago one or two members pointing out this game citing it as the next big indie game to be released. Game came out this week and im quite interested in buying it having played the demo. Anyone else get the game? Any thoughts? Getting lost in a sandbox world is quite appealing for me at the moment.

    Trailer below.

Is a very very good game. A warning: is more Mount & Blade than a "lineal RPG". Theres a lot of going somewhere, and just pew pew pew pew, maybe a bit of farming rez and faming goons.

I have this game very high on my list of best games on the last 2 years. Probably on the top 10.

By now theres "WTF is Spaz", gameplay videos, reviews, etc.. so is possible to make a informed opinion about the game.

It looks fun but it's a bit out of my usual range for an indie game. I purchased Bastion at $15, but the production values on that are incredible. I bought Civ V for $12 earlier this summer. Price isn't everything, but is this a BUY NOW game or a wait for sale game?

    but but but...

Wait. There's still a lot of content to be added. At the moment there IS a lot of grinding and doing repetetive missions with identical factions as you try to work your way to the next storyline area.

I enjoyed it, but didn't finish the campaign. The basic problem was needing to raise faction rep in order to advance certain technologies and required plot points became very difficult. I ended up having to bounce around randomly waiting for a pro-faction mission to spawn. Attacking bases directly sometimes worked but as you get higher lvl they become almost impossible.

John Bain (Total Biscuit) as voice over was quite fun :)

If you really enjoy grindy Mount & Blade gameplay with Asteroids/arcade space combat with the ability to switch between any units on the field (warning, only three units at beginning and limited to various ship sizes) while exploring the vastness of space and generally hoping for a greater variety, maybe Civ-style goodie huts at the dead ends in the galaxy to buff your mothership or horrendous multi-star escort missions a la AI War AI deciding to sweep through and kill your planets off (I'm thinking make it to location X, where each jump with your mothership means you're greeted by local forces), then this is the game for you.

Not that I have 20+ hours logged on it already. It could stand to have more content added for $15, I guess, but more content is coming on the way, so I don't really mind.

SPAZ currently lacks content quite badly and has not been quick to patch (admittedly because the dev 'team' is miniscule, but the fact remains).

Fun game at heart though, I'll probably check back in a year or so to see if it's finished.

I think some of these problems are addresed in version 1.0... the version on Steam.

Honestly? He was by far the worst voice in the entire game, including the wilhelm scream reenactments. He's an announcer/commentator, and cannot act. His inclusion was to raise awareness and because they didn't have a narrator and he'd volunteered to do it for free. He'd also recently gone off on a tangent about terrible faux British accents in another indie game. How ironic.

However, he only gets let out for a paragraph or two every couple of hours so by no means should that colour your enjoyment of the game or whether or not you should pick it up.

Starfarer, whilst still far from release, sounds like it will be a better game (the trailers certainly look prettier), but you take whatever is available and fun as you can get it, no? :)

I have finished Bastion in one day. But SPAZ is for me a 70+ hours of fun. But It happends that I like the combat and the "Gratitous Design Your Ships" battles that has the game.

I keep coming back to it because the concept is so much fun, but it's SO badly balanced that it's unfun.

The zombie enemies are ridiculously difficult. I'm in a area where I MUST eliminate a zombie fleet before I'm allowed to leave the area, however I have no crew (meaning my ships don't operate at optimum efficiency) with no way of getting more, and the fight builds up to an impossible match-up vs a large vessel with numerous power sapping weapons. My big guns cant fire, I have no crew, and I cant leave the system. Fuck this stupid game.

The most annoying thing is, I've put 25+ hours into SPAZ and I feel like I've wasted my time. I actually hate this game, despite it being technically 'fun'. As such, I just cant recommend it to anyone. I cant remember the last time a game actually made me angry, but I've thrown my mouse across the room a few times, just in the last hour after months since the last attempt at playing it.

SPAZ is okay, but playing it usually makes me want to play Space Rangers 2 instead. Which is turn based and old school, but for some reason SPAZ just really gives me that hankering for SR2.

It's a nice game but very ARPG'y. Sort of like Diablo with spaceships. Repetitive as hell but good fun for a while. Disclaimer: Didn't play the release version, just the final beta builds. Should get back to it at some point but like I said, was so repetitive that I didn't even bother playing after it released.
