Already been said, but my picks go to Stewart Lee, Ross Noble, Louis CK and Steven Wright. But particularly Stewart Lee. I find his insight and deliberately slow pacing of his acts incredible to watch.
I'll second (third? fourth?) the Stewart Lee recommendations. He's brilliant.
I'm also surprised no one has mentioned Chris Morris. I know most of the recommendations have been for stand-ups, but Morris's TV and Radio work is phenomenal. Brass Eye was just genius... absolute classic. The Paedogeddon special is particularly apt with the current business in the British media. Then there's The Day Today, Jam, Nathan Barley. But I'm currently digging his Radio work very much... Listening to Why Bother? his collaboration with Peter Cook (another legend) at this moment. It's improvisational stuff, with them both in character; Morris as his Paxman-esque, abrasive interviewer, and Cook as Sir Arthur Streeb-Greebling... and it's absolutely sublime. Here's the first of 5 parts, all the others are on the YouTube (go for Bears, Christ, Prisoner of War, Drugs for them in order).

I found that episode really really funny it is just brilliant. And probably one of the reasons it got so attacked because it was attacking those people. His other Brass Eye stuff is good, plus his film as well.
Richard Ayoade is really good especially his film Submarine he has got down that really deadpan like sense of humour that I quite like.

This past few years I've been in a bit of a weird situation. As a rule of thumb, I don't find women funny, black comedians funny, or americans funny. Women and blacks don't tend to stray from the subject of their identity (woman, nigerian [parents]). Americans just cannot do stand up to save their lives.
However, my favourite comedians are Sarah Millican and Reginald D. Hunter.

It isn't stand-up, but Armando Iannucci has done enough for British comedy that he's worth mentioning. :)

I'm seconding Iannucci and Stewart Lee; they're both incredible minds. mashakos: really? As a whole, British comedy is "hit or miss"? You know, there's more out there than Dave Chappelle doggedly repeating tired stereotypes.

I'm not really a fan of any comedian but I Liked some scetches from the Chapelle's Show and Chris Rock's How Not To Get Your Ass Kicked By The Police is one of the funniest things ever and very much true.
Also redlettermedia channel, especially Star Wars reviews.

Dismissing British comedy based on a sketch show (which, as a sidenote, I quite like actually, though the Thick of It/In The Loop are definitely his best work) and Catherine Tate would be like me dismissing American comedy based on a sketch show of my choosing (I've never really watched any American ones to be honest, it's rare enough there's a decent British one and the sitcom seems to be where American comedy does best) and Carrot Top.
Besides all sketch shows are "hit and miss," even the Fast Show (I would argue the greatest British sketch show) had a few dud recurring sketches.

Agree with you there, the quality of any live daily comedy show will vary wildly anywhere in the world. My comment was a knee jerk reaction to the posted video because it was set up by the poster to be the best work from whoever that comedian was.
