La-Mulana was the only new game I played this year and it's worth a place on anyone's GOTY list.
Torchlight 2 is the only release I've been able to play in 2012. Any game that works of notebooks, 3D, released this year...doesn't matter how bad it can be (which it isn't) it'd still get my GOTY.
Best games for me have been Walking Dead and Dishonored. Really loving the story in the former, and the latter is great fun (currently playing through as a Leon-from-The Professional type and plan to have a more sneaky play through once I'm done and I'm having a blast. Buy it.
Diablo 3
Medal of Honour: Warfighter
Black Ops II
Honourable mentions go to:
Crusader Kings 2
XCOM:EU
Dishonored
The Walking Dead
I'm currently playing Bioshock, so I'm a bit on the late side of things. But from the games that have been released this year I would highlight The Walking Dead, Hotline Miami and Spec Ops: The line.

Definately Hotline Miami, although this might be a bit creepy as a christmas gift. 'Look I got this extremely violent murder simulation! Merry christmas!'
After that it gets a bit blurry. I played quite a few games this year, but rarely to completion. I can however recommend Botanicula, Dishonorend Torchlight 2, Tribes: Ascend (a free to play game, so not that much of a christmas gift either), Resonance, Guild Wars 2 (if you're into MMO's which I'm not anymore) and Planetside 2 (see GW2 and Tribes).
When it comes to older titles I played this year, Vampire the Masquarade: Bloodlines really seems as good as everybody says (you can have a conversation with a stop sign, I think this says it all), Fallout: New Vegas is nice as well, mostly because of one paticular Vault.
XCOM
Dark Souls
Max Payne 3
Dishonored
Sleeping Dogs
Borderlands 2
Chivalry
Natural Selection 2
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
Quantum Conundrum
Vessel
Binary Domain
The Darkness 2
Endless Space
Fallen Enchantress
Warlock
... I take the lives of a few to protect the lives of many. I commit acts of war to preserve the greater peace. I take no joy in killing, but make no mistake; I'll do what needs to be done. Because it's my job. It's my duty. My name is Sam Fisher, and I am a Splinter Cell.
No love for Orcs Must Die 2? IMO really good. Torchlight 2 good also but not really something I'd like to remember as 'game of 2012'.
Otherwise I'm not being original, XCOM and Dishonoured as runner up.
But that all may change on MONDAY! (kidding).
Hotline Miami
XCOM
FTL
Botanicula
And I only just got Dark Souls, but I think that'll be a contender. Obviously Dishonored is highly rated, but I haven't bothered with it yet. Also, with the aforementioned titles you've pretty much got something for everyone, apart from Black Medal of Modern Warfighting Duty: Honour Ops fans.
weekendwarrio.rs - We've got more games than time...
According to my steam profile, the 2012 game I played the most was Rayman Origins. :surprised:
I guess that's my goty.
Nothing so far. Here's hoping for Far Cry 3.
Spec Ops: The Line is more of a Psychological Thriller than your typical "Shooter":

So what makes a game a psychological thriller rather than a shooter?
Let's see... The new releases I bought this year were Crusader Kings 2, Torchlight 2 and Endless Space.
I'd say CK2 gets my GOTY-award.
