I know this might be a bit too late, but I had a similar problem once, with the game crashing after a certain number of turns. It turned out that I didn't have the latest patch. Installing em solved the problem.

The downloaded installer was the 1.07d or something like that as the base, so yeah, I had to patch it up to 1.08c
