    Remembering the Best Bits...

We have a pretty healthy BB community here, and we enjoy sharing our match reports and replays and the like. Despite its shortcomings, Cyanide's game gives us a great capacity to relive our favourite moments.

So I thought, why not preserve and celebrate the most entertaining moments?

    What?

This is how I envision it working...

Throughout next year any player could submit for nomination a moment in one of their matches for being particularly memorable/awesome/Nuffley. Alongside this they'd put the replay up on BBManager or just mail it to me.

Then when December 2013 rolls by, I'd put together a little celebration of sorts in the form of a forum thread containing context, replay videos, odds for the play's success etc. Then we have a vote and choose our favourite play of the whole year.

That's the basic idea, but the specifics are still very much subject to change:

For example, depending on preferences and number of entries, more substantial/frequent voting may be required. Maybe a limit of one submission per user per month. Or a more limited submission period. There are a lot of options.

We could even have more categories, most decided by vote but some could be purely statistics:
    • Cruellest Nuffling?
    • Player of the year (as in in-game character)? We could divide this up into separate stat-based awards, say most violent player, best scorer, best (surviving) punching bag...
    • Player of the year (as in actual person - in terms of sportsmanship, sociability, etc)?
    • Match report of the year?

    Why?

It's just a bit of fun and games, and also a way we can look back on what's come before and enjoy it again. It could also build a bit of esteem for our leagues and maybe a little celebrity for the in-game veterans who have somehow not yet died horribly.

    When?

I imagine each 'award year' running from Dec 1st to Dec 1st, with the award and voting taking place in the first month of the following season (and awards for Christmas!). This works particularly well for me because I tend to have sod all to do around Christmas. :P

    Who?

Oh and any of our RPS league matches should be able to take part, including the Challenge league and FUMBBL even. Ideally there should be no distinction between them, matches in any league should qualify for any category.

    Okay then.

Right now though, I'm just gauging interest.

So... is this a crazy, bad idea or a crazy good idea?

(Also if you think this is neat and have any thoughts on how the voting categories should be split, I would definitely like to hear your input!)

I approve of this idea. 12 months is a long time though; how about doing them half yearly?

I also approve this idea. While we could do 6 or 12 months rolling I'd imagine we could do the first much sooner than that (maybe by Christmas? Could be day 24 on Jiiiim's advent calendar) with all the games that have gone by already.

Really nice idea, +1. You missed an easy pun though by not calling this thread 'remembering the best blitz'.

Playing as undead mundanely meant I never really collected many memories, just a blur of 1 - 0 victories and horrific 5 - 0 losses. Rather I remember the fouls, crowd pushes and failed dodges which lead to my conscripted players.

And the occasional and completely unreasonable passes made by zombies which were then dropped by ghouls who failed a 3+ dodge with reroll.

Nothing magical, but that's what I get for conservative play.

@Helio, it is my hope that there will be categories to suit every team's playstyle, hence things like most violent etc.

@PW and Lowkey, I would be open to that. Would you rather see the same awards up for grabs each time, or should we reserve a few awards for Christmas only?

@NieA7, We could probably scrape a few things together for this year, kind of a taster. That is, if folks have some memorable plays to contribute. Also going back through the records for statistics based rewards is doable, but there is a slight backlog starting right now so might not go too deeply into those stats this year?

For me, a highlight of this year was my elfs losing 5-2 to Jiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim's lizards... and then winning 5-2 on the rematch, which would have been 5-3 if that MV10 skink hadn't killed itself on a GFI on turn 16.

    I really like this idea!

My thoughts are that we should begin by dividing it up into broad categories of Matches, Teams, Players, and Coaches. Then you can further divide each category into most violent, highest scoring, most feared (this one would clearly be a vote), and so on.

I'd be tempted to have another category for 'Plays' for all those ridiculous elfball moments. I'm trying to think if there's an bashy equivalent for a really dramatic play, but apart from a sudden flurry of injuries in a row, I can't see it.

Expanding on that here are some ideas for awards. I invite all punsters to come up with proper names for them.

Matches: (Matches can be nominated by either player right after it was played, it must be on BBManager.)
Highest scoring match by one team
Highest scoring match by both teams combined
Match with the ball changing hands back and forth in a single drive the most times.
Match with one (or both?) team mostly wiped out.
Most affected by Nuffle. (Luck being all the way for one of the players. Or possibly both teams succeeding/failing in everything)

Plays: (Plays can be nominated by either player right after it was played, it must be on BBManager.)
Lucky play (Something with bad odds coming off)
Impessive play (A player with great skills showing them off to their full extent. Mostly elfball, but could also be awarded for a multiple block player getting two kills at once or similar.)
Tactical play (A coach spotting some opening most wouldn't in what would otherwise be a bad situation and leaping on it.)

    Players: (Mostly stats-driven)
For killing the most valuable player. (Maimings bad enough to force a dismissal may also count.) (Must be reported)
    Highest scoring
    Most injuries caused
    Most injuries sustained

Teams: (Nominations just before the voting)
    Most feared
Most gifted (doubles and stat-ups galore)
    Highest scoring
    Most injuries caused
    Best tier 3 team

Coaches: (Nominations just before the voting)
Best coach (doing well with what you chose to play.)
Best results (choosing well and doing well with it.)
    Best community building
    Best match reports

Holy crap you make it look like a lot of work :P

I appreciate the time you put into those suggestions, but I would probably cut back on the number of categories. It feels like we could be reducing each individual accomplishment by quantifying and diluting it that much.

I'll give it some thought over the next couple of days and try and collate these ideas.

Okay so here's the super shortlist that I've been considering, based on input. It could still do with some refinement.

Note, those below marked ** also require a replay uploading to BB Manager. Also some of them I'm not sure about at all.

    Player-Nominated and Voted Categories
    • Smartest play**.
    • Luckiest play**.
    • Most nuffled**.
    • Most feared team.
    • Most feared player.
    • Match report of the year.
    • Wizard of the Year - the smartest coach.
    • Cheerleader of the Year - the funniest or most entertaining coach, both in and out of the game.
    • MVP of the Year - the big one. The award for great sportsmanship, positive attitude, getting involved and all that.

    Categories from Raw Stats
    • Longest winning streak - whether this should be team-based or coach-based, I don't know.
    • Most violent player - contrary to "Most Feared" above, this one will be purely stat-based.
    • Stone coldest killer - just the deaths?
    • Best punching bag - the player most injured.
    • Best scorer.
    • Survivor award - most experienced with most games played?

We could commence with a few of these - mostly some the nomination categories (the stat-based stuff is more time consuming because of the backlog) - for this Christmas season.

    Anyway, comments/thoughts?

We should divide up the Match Report award into:

    Best Jim Match Report
Best Match Report not by Jim

Alternatively, we name the Match Report Award the 'Jim Memorial Award'. It will be named thusly because I will kill him, so that I have a chance of winning it.

In all seriousness, those look like a pretty good balance between getting some fun awards out and not turning it into a herculean task of organization. I'd be tempted to divide up the 'feared' team and player awards into feared due to violence (e.g. Heliocentric type killers) and feared due to 'how the hell do I stop him scoring'? Perhaps 'feared' and 'unstoppable'?

Irrational fears are called phobias, no-one has any reason to be scared of me, I am but a messenger of nuffle.
